Chapter 5 - Fire on the Ice

Grant Mercer backed away from Rebecca, pulling her violently by her matted hair to use her as a human shield, pressing the cold barrel of his revolver against her neck.

"Stay back, Caldwell!" Grant shrieked, his face pale and slick with sweat despite the freezing temperature inside the shed. "One step, one move, and I blow her head off! I swear to God I’ll do it!"

The four mercenaries surrounding the burn barrel raised their weapons toward the catwalk, their fingers white on their triggers.

Ethan didn't move an inch. He stood at the edge of the iron railing, looking down at Grant with a cold, detached amusement that terrified every man in the room.

"You're holding a revolver with a six-pound trigger pull, Grant," Ethan said smoothly, his voice echoing off the corrugated iron roof. "Your hands are shaking from alcohol withdrawal and hypothermia. You’re hyperventilating. Your reaction time is roughly eight-tenths of a second."

"Shut up! Shut the hell up!" Grant screamed, his eyes rolling wildly.

"My reaction time," Ethan continued, stepping slowly along the catwalk, "is two-tenths of a second. My men are stationed at every window in this building. Before your finger can contract three millimeters against that trigger, four high-velocity rounds will pass through your skull."

As if on cue, six red laser dots snapped onto the chests and foreheads of the four mercenaries.

The mercenaries froze. They were professionals hired for a simple retrieval job; they hadn't signed up to fight Ethan Caldwell's private army in a tactical kill box.

"Drop your weapons," Marcus’s voice boomed over the mill's outdoor loudspeaker. "Now."

Two of the mercenaries immediately dropped their rifles onto the concrete floor, raising their hands.

"Traitorous bastards!" Grant screamed, panicking completely.

In a moment of sheer, unadulterated madness, Grant shoved Rebecca forward onto the concrete floor and spun toward the catwalk, firing wild shots into the dark.

CRACK! CRACK!

The muzzle flashes lit up the shed.

Before Grant’s second shot could clear the barrel, a silenced rifle round tore through his right shoulder. Grant screamed, dropping the revolver as the impact spun him around.

Simultaneously, Marcus and his team breached the ground-floor windows, taking down the remaining hostile mercenaries with non-lethal precision.

Ethan vaulted over the catwalk railing, dropping fifteen feet to the concrete floor below, landing with a heavy, practiced thud.

He didn't even look at Grant, who was squirming on the floor, clutching his bleeding shoulder and whining in agony.

Ethan rushed straight to Rebecca.

He dropped to his knees beside her, whipping out his combat knife and slicing through the plastic zip-ties binding her wrists.

"Becca," Ethan breathed, pulling his heavy wool coat off his shoulders and wrapping it securely around her shivering body. "Becca, look at me."

Rebecca collapsed into his arms, her head resting against his chest. She was trembling so violently her teeth were chattering, her skin icy to the touch.

"Ethan..." she sobbed, clutching his arms with what little strength she had left. "Sophie... Caleb... Connor... did they make it? Did she find you?"

"They're safe," Ethan said, tears stinging his eyes as he wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close to his heart. "Sophie is the braves girl I've ever met. She carried the boys through the blizzard all the way to my front door. They're warm, they're fed, and they're waiting for you."

Rebecca let out a ragged, trembling breath, a mixture of profound relief and utter exhaustion washing over her bruised face. "I thought... I thought you hated me, Ethan. I thought you'd never forgive me."

"I was a fool, Becca," Ethan whispered, kissing her matted hair. "I never stopped loving you. Not for a single day."

Behind them, Grant let out a raspy, painful groan as he dragged himself across the concrete toward a fallen pistol.

"You think... you think you won, Caldwell?" Grant spat out, blood dripping from his chin. "The syndicate... they know about the drive. They’ll come for those kids! They’ll never stop hunting them!"

Ethan slowly stood up. He turned around, his eyes locking onto Grant with a cold, terrifying finality.

He walked over, picked up Grant’s fallen revolver from the floor, cleared the cylinder, and threw the empty weapon into the roaring burn barrel.

"They won't come for my family, Grant," Ethan said softly, stepping on Grant's uninjured shoulder, pinning him firmly to the cold concrete floor. "Because by tomorrow morning, I am buying every debt, every asset, and every contract your syndicate holds. And as for you..."

Ethan looked over at Marcus, who stepped forward with heavy steel handcuffs.

"Hand him over to the federal task force along with his encrypted drive," Ethan ordered cold. "Make sure they put him in a maximum-security federal holding facility under ninety-nine years of non-parole detention for human trafficking and domestic terrorism."

May you like

"No! No! Ethan, please!" Grant shrieked as Marcus hauled him to his feet. "We're family! You can't do this to me!"

Ethan didn't even turn around. He lifted Rebecca gently into his arms, cradling her against his chest as if she were made of glass, and walked out of the ruined timber mill into the quiet, falling snow.
