Chapter 10 - The Vow on the Lawn

Six months later, the sun was setting over the hills of the Hale estate, casting a warm, golden light across the manicured lawns and blooming rose gardens.
There were no Marshals in bulletproof vests patrolling the perimeter. No infrared camera alarms blaring. The estate had returned to a place of peace, filled with the sounds of laughter, clinking champagne glasses, and acoustic guitar music playing softly under a white silk marquee.
Sophie stood in front of a full-length mirror in the master suite, adjusting the train of a stunning, vintage lace wedding gown.
Her mother walked in behind her, holding a bouquet of white peonies and lavender. "You look like a vision, sweet pea," Eleanor said, her voice thick with emotion as she fastened a delicate pearl necklace around Sophie's neck. "Three hundred people down there, and every single one of them knows that man adores the ground you walk on."
"We already got married in a hospital room covered in blood, Mom," Sophie said with a gentle laugh, looking at her reflection. "This feels... almost redundant."
"That was a contract to survive," Eleanor said softly, kissing her daughter's cheek. "Today is a promise to live."
A moment later, a knock came at the door, and Leo bounded in, looking remarkably sharp in his tux, holding two shiny gold wedding bands in a velvet box. "Dad says if you don't come down in five minutes, he's going to exercise his judicial authority to start the music himself."
Sophie laughed, taking Leo's small hand. "Tell the judge his bride is coming."
Down on the lower lawn, under an archway woven with white roses and eucalyptus, Marcus stood waiting.
When the music shifted to the slow, soaring notes of a cello, and Sophie appeared at the top of the stone steps holding her mother's arm, Marcus lost his breath entirely.
The man who had faced down federal indictments, cartel assassins, and the most dangerous criminals in the country looked weak at the knees. His slate-gray eyes filled with unshed tears as he watched her walk down the aisle toward him—not as a victim he had saved, not as a witness he had shielded, but as the woman who had restored his soul.
When she reached the altar, Marcus stepped forward, taking both of her hands into his.
The officiant, a long-time friend and retired Supreme Court Justice, smiled at the couple. "We are gathered here today to reaffirm a covenant forged in adversity, bound by courage, and sealed in love. Marcus, do you take Sophie to be your lawfully wedded wife, to love, honor, and cherish, in sickness and in health, for as long as you both shall live?"
Marcus looked down into Sophie's eyes, his voice steady, deep, and overflowing with absolute devotion. "I took Sophie as my wife when she gave her blood for my family. I take her today with my heart, my life, and my eternal gratitude. I promise to stand between you and every storm this world ever sends. You are my home, Sophie. Forever."
The officiant turned to Sophie. "Sophie, do you take Marcus to be your lawfully wedded husband?"
Sophie squeezed his hands, tears of pure joy spilling over her lashes, a brilliant, radiant smile lighting up her face.
"I took you when I didn't know you, Marcus," she whispered softly, her voice echoing clearly through the quiet garden. "I take you today knowing every part of your heart. I promise to love you, to trust you, and to stand beside you—not behind you—in everything to come. You gave me your name to save my life; I give you my heart to complete yours."
"By the power vested in me," the officiant declared with a broad smile, "I now reaffirm what was written in blood and settled in truth: you are husband and wife. Marcus, you may kiss your bride."
Marcus didn't wait. He closed the distance, pulling Sophie into his arms, dipping her slightly as he pressed his lips to hers in a deep, sweeping kiss that drew cheers and applause from the crowd.
Leo cheered loudly from the front row, tossing rose petals into the air, while Eleanor wiped joyful tears from her eyes.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in vibrant hues of purple, orange, and gold, Marcus held Sophie tight against his chest, watching their family and friends celebrate on the lawn below.

"Happy ending, Judge Hale?" Sophie teased gently, resting her hand over his heart.
Marcus leaned down, resting his cheek against her soft hair, his eyes shining with profound peace. "Not an ending, my love," he whispered. "Just the beginning."
