Chapter 7 - The Bridge of Secrets

The Miller Street Bridge was an abandoned industrial suspension bridge spanning the churning, muddy waters of the Blackwood River. Fog hung thick over the rusting iron girders, obscuring the far bank in a shroud of grey.

The van screeched to a halt in the center of the span. Vance’s men dragged Sophie, Leo, and Eleanor out into the biting wind, forcing them to stand near the edge of the low pedestrian railing. Below them, a hundred-foot drop ended in a violent torrent of rocks and icy water.

Three armed men stood guard, their weapons trained on the small group. Vance leaned against the hood of the van, checking his gold wristwatch with bored impatience.

A high-pitched squeal of tires echoed down the empty approach road. A single silver sedan tore through the fog, fishtailing wildly before slamming to a stop fifty yards away.

The driver's door opened, and Marcus Hale stepped out.

He was bleeding from a deep graze along his hairline, his shirt torn and covered in soot, but his posture was upright, rigid, and deadly. In his left hand, he held a heavy black Pelican case containing the server drives. In his right hand, he held nothing.

"Let them go, Vance," Marcus said, his voice carrying clearly over the roar of the wind and the river below. "You have what you came for. The drives contain every unredacted file, every financial ledger, every recording. Take them and leave the country."

Vance chuckled, a dry, rattling sound. "You always were an arrogant bastard, Marcus. You think this is still about money? You ruined my business network. You sent three of my top captains to supermax facilities. You destroyed twenty years of work."

Vance stepped forward, grabbing Sophie by the hair and pulling her back against his chest, resting the barrel of his revolver against her temple. Sophie gasped from the pain, but her eyes never left Marcus’s.

"I want you to feel what it's like to lose everything," Vance sneered. "First the girl who bled for your boy. Then the boy. Then I leave you alive, just like the note said, to spend the rest of your pathetic life crying into your judicial robes."

"Wait!" Marcus yelled, taking a step forward, his eyes wide with a terror Sophie had never seen in him before. "Vance, listen to me! She doesn't mean anything to me!"

The words hit the air like a physical blow. Sophie felt her heart drop into her stomach.

"She's a veterinary tech!" Marcus shouted, his voice cracking as he pointed a finger at Sophie. "I used her! I used emergency marriage laws to create a legal shield so the grand jury couldn't subpoena her witness testimony! I don't love her! She was a human shield for my son, and then she became a legal tool! Kill her if you want—it changes nothing! Just give me my boy!"

Vance paused, squinting through the fog at Marcus. "You're lying."

"Look at her!" Marcus scoffed, taking another deliberate step closer, holding the Pelican case out. "Look at her hands! She washes cages for twelve dollars an hour! Do you really think a Hale would marry a nobody from the East Side? She was convenient, Vance! A bloody distraction to buy time until I could get these drives out of the house!"

Sophie looked at Marcus. The coldness in his eyes was absolute. The platinum ring on her hand felt suddenly freezing, like a band of ice cutting into her skin. Tears stung her eyes, spilling down her cheeks in the freezing wind.

It was all a game, her mind screamed. The kiss in the bedroom, the promises in the hospital... it was all just tactics.

Vance laughed, amused by the dramatic revelation. "A cold-blooded political move. I respect it, Judge. But it doesn't change my math. She still dies."

Vance began to pull the trigger.

In that microsecond, Marcus’s eyes flickered to Sophie—and she saw it.

A tiny, almost imperceptible twitch of his left eyebrow. The code phrase he had taught Leo during their security drills: When the judge drops his voice, you move.

It wasn't a betrayal. It was a distraction.
