Chapter 5 - Venom in the Dark

Marcus snatched the phone off the receiver on the second ring. "Hale."

Sophie watched his face transform instantly. The warmth melted away, replaced by a mask of absolute, chilling ice.

"When?" Marcus demanded. "...How did they bypass the perimeter? ...Lock down the west wing now. I'm on my way."

He slammed the phone down and reached into the top drawer of his desk, pulling out a sleek black SIG Sauer 9mm pistol. He checked the magazine with an experienced, practiced motion before flipping the safety off.

"What happened?" Sophie asked, panic instantly flooding her veins.

"An intrusion on the north fence," Marcus said sharply, grabbing her arm and pulling her toward the concealed door behind the bookcase that led to the estate's panic room. "Lead Marshal reports a vehicle breached the rear gate. I need you and your mother inside the shelter immediately."

"Marcus, no! What about Leo?"

"Leo is already in the secondary safe room with Chief Marshal Miller," Marcus said, shoving the heavy oak door open. "Get inside, Sophie!"

"I'm not leaving you!" she snapped, surprising even herself with the fierce rage in her voice. "You're a judge, Marcus, not a SWAT officer!"

"I spent four years as a federal prosecutor in South America before I ever took the bench, Sophie," he replied, his eyes blazing. "I know how to use a gun. Now get in!"

A sharp crack echoed through the lower level of the mansion—the unmistakable sound of a suppressed rifle round shattering a reinforced glass window.

Sophie didn't hesitate. Instead of stepping into the panic room, she grabbed a heavy brass statue from the desk and backed up toward the main hallway. "I'm coming with you."

Marcus stared at her for a fraction of a second, a flicker of dark pride crossing his features, before he yielded. "Stay two steps behind me. If I tell you to drop, you drop."

They moved down the dimly lit hallway of the west wing. The power had been cut; only the red emergency strip lights along the baseboards cast a bloody glow against the stone walls.

As they reached the gallery overlooking the main foyer, Sophie spotted them—three men in tactical gear, night-vision goggles lowered, moving with military precision across the marble floor. Leading them was the man with the scarred neck—Julian Vance's primary enforcer.

"They aren't here to kill us," Marcus whispered, his breath warm against her ear as they crouched behind the wrought-iron balustrade. "They're here to retrieve something. Vance knows the grand jury meets in forty-eight hours. He needs the original hard drives from my home server."

"Where are the hard drives?" Sophie murmured.

"In the safe in my master bedroom," Marcus said grimly. "Which is right behind those three men."

Suddenly, one of the intruders paused, raising his weapon toward the gallery. "We have movement above!"

Marcus didn't hesitate. He leaned over the railing and fired three rapid shots. The lead intruder dropped, the heavy heavy rounds shattering his body armor. The foyer exploded into chaos as suppressing fire chewed through the iron railings, showering Marcus and Sophie with sparks and stone splinters.

"Go!" Marcus yelled, grabbing Sophie by the belt of her robe and shoving her down the side hallway toward the master suite.

They scrambled into the bedroom, Marcus slamming the heavy oak door and throwing the deadbolt just as a spray of bullets perforated the wood.

"They have us cornered!" Sophie gasped, pressing her back against the wall as the door shuddered under heavy kicks.

"Not yet," Marcus said. He rushed to the floor-length mirror, pulled a hidden latch, and swung the frame open to reveal a wall safe. He quickly punched in an eight-digit code. The door clicked open, revealing a row of encrypted flash drives and a small black box.

He grabbed the drives and shoved them into Sophie's jacket pocket. "If they breach this room, you take the service elevator behind the closet. It leads directly to the subterranean drainage tunnel under the east garden. A car is waiting at the exit point two miles away."

"What about you?" Sophie shouted over the sound of wood splintering.

Marcus turned to her, grabbed her by the back of the neck, and pulled her into a fierce, uncompromising kiss.

It wasn't the staged touch of a courtroom performance; it was raw, possessive, and electric. His lips parted hers with an intensity that burned away the panic, replacing it with a searing clarity. Sophie leaned into him, her hands clutching the lapels of his shirt, tasting the faint metallic hint of adrenaline on his skin.

When he pulled back, his eyes were blazing. "I'll be right behind you. Now move!"
