Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Guest

Downstairs, the front door flew open. Henry Carter stood in the doorway, his chest heavy with rage, blocking Jason Miller from stepping across the threshold.
"Get off my porch, Jason!" Henry shouted, his voice echoing across the yard. "You aren't welcome here!"
"I have a right to see my kid, old man!" Jason snarled, pushing his way forward. "I heard Sophia came back from the city with her! You can't keep my daughter from me!"
"You gave up your rights four years ago when you left her crying in an emergency room!" Henry yelled, his fist clenched.
"I don't give a damn what you think!" Jason stepped onto the porch, shoving Henry’s shoulder. The old man stumbled back against the doorframe, his bad knee buckling slightly under the impact.
Inside the hallway, Emma screamed. Lily was hiding behind the sofa in the living room, clutching Mr. Whiskers to her chest, her small body trembling with familiar terror.
Jason raised his hand to push Henry again—and then a hand wrapped around his wrist.
It was not a quick grab; it was a vice grip of pure, crushing iron.
Jason gasped, his arm instantly pinned in mid-air. He spun around, ready to swing at whoever had touched him, but stopped dead in his tracks.
Dominic Moretti stood on the porch behind him. He didn't look angry. He looked completely bored, as if he had just intercepted a annoying insect.
"You placed your hands on an old man," Dominic said smoothly, his deep voice carrying a terrifying resonance. "That was your first mistake."
Jason tried to pull his arm back, but Dominic’s grip didn't budge a millimeter. "Who the hell are you?! Let go of me!"
"I am the man who is currently deciding whether to break your wrist in three places or throw you off this porch," Dominic replied calmly.
Jason, driven by local arrogance and pride, swung his left fist directly at Dominic’s face.
Dominic didn't even bother to duck. He simply caught Jason’s left fist in his open palm, absorbing the blow effortlessly. With a subtle twist of his hands, he stepped forward, driving his knee sharply into Jason’s midsection.
Jason let out a choked gasp, all the air exploding from his lungs as he collapsed to his knees on the wooden porch.
Dominic stood over him, looking down at the gasping man with absolute disgust. He reached into his pocket, pulled out a pristine white handkerchief, and wiped his palms as if he had just touched something filthy.
"Listen to me very carefully," Dominic said, leaning down so his face was inches from Jason’s ear. "If you ever come within a mile of Sophia or Lily again, I will not call the police. I will simply ensure that no one ever finds what is left of you. Do you understand me?"
Jason looked up into Dominic’s eyes. He didn't see a protective boyfriend; he saw a monster—a man who had killed, who commanded death, and who held absolute power. The local bully’s courage vanished instantly, replaced by a cold, paralyzing terror.
"Y-yes," Jason squeaked out, coughing violently.
"Get up," Dominic commanded.
Jason scrambled to his feet, tumbling down the porch steps, falling twice in the gravel before reaching his silver pickup. He slammed the door, threw the truck in reverse, and tore down the dirt driveway as if the devil himself were chasing him.
Dominic watched the truck disappear down the road. He folded his handkerchief, placed it back in his pocket, and turned around.
Henry stood in the doorway, staring at Dominic in total shock. Sophia and Emma were standing in the hallway, wide-eyed and breathless.
Dominic stepped past Henry into the house, walking directly toward the living room sofa. He dropped to one knee, looking beneath the wooden frame where Lily was hiding.
"It's safe now, little one," Dominic said, his voice dropping into the softest, gentlest tone imaginable. He held out his arms. "The bad man is gone."
Lily looked at him, her blue-gray eyes wide. She let go of her stuffed rabbit, threw her tiny arms around Dominic’s neck, and buried her face in his shoulder.

Dominic lifted her into his arms, standing up slowly. He pressed his cheek against her soft hair, cradling her small body as if she were made of solid gold.
Across the room, Sophia watched them, her heart overflowing with an emotion so powerful it terrified her. She looked at Henry, who was slowly nodding his head, his final lingering doubts about Dominic Moretti entirely erased.
