Chapter 9 - The Return of the King

Sunday morning arrived with a bittersweet stillness.

Margaret Carter’s condition had deteriorated overnight, but her face remained entirely free of pain. She lay peacefully in her bed, surrounded by her family—Henry holding her right hand, Emma and her new husband on her left, and Sophia kneeling beside her, crying quiet, gentle tears.

Dominic stood near the window, Lily cradled in his arms.

Margaret opened her eyes one last time. She looked at Henry, smiling softly, then turned her gaze to Dominic. She gave a faint, satisfied nod—a final silent gesture of trust—before closing her eyes for the last time.

The room descended into a quiet, respectful grief. There were no frantic screams, no chaotic panic—only the profound, beautiful passing of a woman who had fulfilled her purpose and left her family whole.

Two hours later, after the local doctor had arrived and completed the necessary arrangements, Dominic stood on the front porch with Henry Carter.

The old farmer looked exhausted, but his posture was straight. He turned to Dominic, extending his hand.

"Thank you, son," Henry said, his voice thick with emotion. "For everything you did for her. For everything you did for my girls."

"It was an honor, Mr. Carter," Dominic replied, taking the old man’s hand in a firm, meaningful grip.

"Take care of them," Henry requested, looking toward the SUV where Sophia and Lily were waiting. "Don't let the city break them."

"No one touches them as long as I live," Dominic promised.

The drive back to Manhattan was completely different from the journey three days earlier. There was no awkward tension, no uncertain boundaries. Sophia sat in the passenger seat, her heart heavy with grief for her mother, but filled with a deep, undeniable warmth for the man driving beside her.

When they arrived at the grand estate in Manhattan, Marco and four armed security men were waiting in the driveway. The atmosphere was taut with impending violence.

Dominic parked the SUV, turned off the engine, and turned to look at Sophia.

"Sophia," he said, his voice deep and solemn. "The weekend is over. Our agreement is technically finished."

Sophia felt a cold knot form in her chest. "Dominic..."

"I promised your mother I would protect you," he continued, taking her hands in his. "I promised her I would love you and Lily. I am not a man who lives a peaceful life, Sophia. My world is dangerous, dark, and demanding. But if you walk away from me now, you take my heart with you."

Sophia looked into his intense, dark eyes—the eyes of a man who ruled an empire, yet had dropped to his knees to pull her daughter out from behind a sofa.

"I don't want to walk away, Dominic," she whispered, tears spilling over her lashes. "I love you. I loved you long before you took me to Pennsylvania."

Dominic let out a deep breath, pulling her toward him and pressing his lips against hers in a fierce, passionate kiss that sealed their fates together forever.

When they broke apart, Lily popped her head between the front seats, holding Mr. Whiskers.

"Are we home now, Mr. Dominic?" Lily asked softly.

Dominic reached back, gently cuping the little girl’s cheek. "Yes, little one. You are home. And you are never leaving."
