Chapter 2 - The Sunrise Raid

At 5:45 AM, the sky over the suburbs of Oakridge was a dark, bruising purple.

The rain had cleared, leaving behind a cold, biting mist that hung low over the manicured lawns. A mile down the road sat Evan and Marissa’s rented luxury townhouse—a place they paid three thousand dollars a month for while claiming they were "struggling" to pay for Mom’s care.

Daniel and I sat in our car parked down the block, watching four black police cruisers and an unmarked federal SUV pull up to the curb. Marcus Vance stepped out of the SUV, wearing a tactical windbreaker with FEDERAL TASK FORCE stamped in yellow across the back.

"Are you ready for this, Maya?" Daniel asked, reaching over to squeeze my hand.

I looked down at my phone. I had brought Mom to our house, bathed her, fed her hot soup, and tucked her into our softest guest bed under three goose-down comforters. Seeing her asleep, safe and warm, had burned away any remaining hesitation in my soul.

"I’m ready," I said. "Let’s take back what they stole."

We walked down the sidewalk just as Agent Vance and four local sheriff's deputies approached the front porch.

Inside the townhouse, lights were on. Upbeat music was faintly playing, and through the sheer curtains of the front window, we could see Evan holding a glass of champagne, dancing with Marissa. They were celebrating their new fortune, completely oblivious to the net tightening around their necks.

Agent Vance didn't bother knocking politely. He slammed his fist four times against the heavy wooden door.

"FEDERAL AGENTS! OPEN THE DOOR! WE HAVE A SEARCH AND SEIZURE WARRANT!"

The music inside cut off instantly.

Through the window, we saw Evan freeze, dropping his champagne glass. It shattered against the hardwood floor. Marissa’s scream echoed from inside.

"Evan Hayes! You have ten seconds to open this door, or we will breach!" Vance warned, his hand resting on his sidearm.

The door swung open five seconds later. Evan stood there wearing a silk robe, his face pale, his eyes wide with sweat and confusion. Marissa cowered behind him in an expensive silk nightgown, clutching a handful of high-end shopping bags she had apparently opened that morning.

"What is this?!" Evan demanded, trying to sound authoritative, though his voice cracked on the last word. "This is private property! You can't just come here!"

"Evan Hayes, Marissa Hayes," Agent Vance said coldly, stepping into the foyer with two deputies behind him. "I am Special Agent Marcus Vance with the Federal Financial Crimes Task Force. I am executing an emergency warrant for your arrest on suspicion of Wire Fraud, Money Laundering, Forgery, Grand Larceny, and Felony Financial Exploitation of an Elderly Adult."

"What?!" Marissa shrieked, stepping forward. "That’s absurd! We didn't steal anything! Eleanor signed that house over to us voluntarily! She wanted us to have it!"

"Is that why she was sleeping on newspapers under the Interstate 95 overpass in twenty-degree weather last night?" I stepped out from behind Agent Vance, looking my brother straight in the eye.

Evan flinched as if he’d been struck. His eyes darted to me, then to Daniel, who stood behind me like an immovable wall of dark judgment.

"Maya..." Evan stuttered, his confidence completely collapsing. "Listen... you don't understand... the hospital bills were astronomical! We had to sell the house to clear her debts!"

"We spoke to the hospital’s billing department at 2:00 AM, Evan," Daniel interjected smoothly, pulling a crisp stack of financial documents from his coat pocket. "Mom’s entire hospital stay was covered by Medicare and her late husband’s secondary union insurance. Her out-of-pocket balance was exactly $142.50."

Evan’s jaw dropped.

"You sold a $450,000 property for a $210,000 kickback to a predatory Wholesaler LLC," Daniel continued, his voice dropping into a chilling, precise tone. "You wired $30,000 for a Porsche, put $15,000 into offshore gambling accounts, and left your stroke-recovering mother in a ninety-dollar-a-night motel until her room expired. When she called you, you blocked her number."

"You... you can't prove that!" Marissa screamed, her fingernails digging into Evan’s arm. "We have a signed Power of Attorney!"

"A Power of Attorney signed three days after a major neurological event, witnessed by a notary public who happens to be your younger cousin," Agent Vance added, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. "A notary whose license was revoked two years ago for forgery. The document is void on its face."

Click-clack.

The cold steel locked around Evan’s wrists.

"Maya! Tell them to stop!" Evan panicked, twisting as the deputy pulled his arms behind his back. "I’m your brother! We’re family! You can't let them do this to me!"

"You stopped being my brother the moment you let Mom freeze under a bridge so you could buy a luxury car," I said, my voice completely devoid of pity. "Take them away."
