Chapter 7 - The Bail Hearing

On Thursday morning, the County Courthouse was packed for Evan and Marissa’s formal bail hearing.

Evan and Marissa sat at the defense table, wearing dark blue county jail jumpsuits. Without their designer clothes, makeup, and arrogant postures, they looked small, desperate, and terrified.

Their defense attorney, a sleek court-appointed lawyer named Jonathan Croft, stood up to address the judge.

"Your Honor," Croft argued, adjusting his glasses. "My clients are life-long residents of this county with no prior criminal records. The charges stemming from this family dispute are deeply regretful, but they are fundamentally a civil disagreement over estate management. We request that bail be set at a reasonable amount of $25,000 so they can assist in resolving these family matters."

Judge Thomas looked over his glasses at the defense counsel with visible disdain.

"A civil disagreement, Mr. Croft?" Judge Thomas asked, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "Leaving a seventy-two-year-old stroke victim on the street while draining her bank accounts and fencing her deceased husband's possessions sounds remarkably like a series of major felonies to this court."

Daniel stood up from the prosecutor’s gallery, stepping forward as a friend of the court and representative of the victim.

"Your Honor," Daniel spoke, his deep voice filling the courtroom. "The state requests that bail be set at $1,000,000 each, or that the defendants be remanded without bail pending trial."

Evan jumped out of his chair at the defense table. "One million dollars?! Are you insane, Daniel?! Maya, tell him to stop! You’re ruining my life!"

"Sit down, Defendant!" Judge Thomas slammed his gavel down hard. BANG! "One more outburst from you, Mr. Hayes, and I will cite you for criminal contempt!"

Daniel didn't even look back at Evan. He continued presenting his arguments smoothly.

"We have presented certified evidence that Defendant Evan Hayes attempted to transfer funds to offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands as recently as forty-eight hours ago," Daniel revealed, laying a document on the clerk's desk. "Furthermore, both defendants pose a severe flight risk and a demonstrated history of intimidating the primary witness—their own mother."

Judge Thomas reviewed the offshore transfer logs provided by Agent Vance’s team. His face darkened.

"Bail is set at $750,000 for each defendant," Judge Thomas ruled sharply. "Conditioned upon full surrender of all passports, electronic monitoring, and an absolute, non-negotiable Orders of Protection barring any contact—direct or indirect—with Eleanor Hayes or Maya Vale."

BANG!

Evan collapsed back into his chair, covering his face with his hands and sobbing hysterically. Marissa turned on him right at the defense table, screaming at him and slapping his arm, blaming him for bringing her into his scheme.

As the bailiffs dragged them back toward the holding cells, I stood beside Daniel, feeling a cold, clean sense of closure washing over my soul.
