Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Dark

By morning, Marina opened her eyes to the soft amber glow of the private hospital suite. Her head felt heavy, but the steady beep of the heart monitor and the warmth of a plush velvet blanket grounding her offered a strange sense of safety.
Sitting in an armchair by the window, laptop balanced on his knees, was Miles Kincaid.
"You're awake," Miles said quietly, closing his laptop and setting it aside.
Marina panicked, trying to sit up, but a sharp wave of dizziness made her gasp. "Mr. Kincaid... I—I'm so sorry. The boys... did I ruin their evening? I promise I'll clean the gate, I'll pay for the ambulance..."
"Marina, stop," Miles said, his voice softer than she had ever heard it. He walked over, poured a glass of water, and handed it to her. "You don't owe me money, and you didn't ruin anything. My sons are currently sleeping in the adjacent room after refusing to leave until they knew you were alive."
Tears welling up in her eyes, Marina swallowed hard. "They... they stayed?"
"They care about you," Miles said, leaning against the edge of her bed, his gaze penetrating. "And so do I. Which is why you need to tell me who was in that black SUV last night, Marina."
Her body went instantly rigid. She pulled the blanket higher up her chin, her hands trembling. "It was... nobody. Just a wrong turn."
"A wrong turn doesn't leave bruised handprints on your wrists," Miles countered firmly. "And a wrong turn doesn't make a woman throw her personal belongings over my hedge to keep them safe. My security guards retrieved a small leather pouch from the bushes this morning, Marina. Do you want me to open it?"
Marina buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking with silent sobs. "If you open it... if they find out where I am, they will destroy everything you have, Mr. Kincaid. You don't know who these people are."
"I am Miles Kincaid," he stated flatly, without an ounce of arrogance, just sheer factual weight. "There are very few people in this country who can touch what's mine. And right now, you are under my roof."
Before Marina could speak, the door creaked open. Aiden and Lucas peeked in, their eyes lighting up the moment they saw her sitting up.
"Marina!" Lucas squeaked, sprinting across the floor and burying his head against her mattress. Aiden followed closely behind, holding a messy, hand-drawn card depicting three figures under a bright yellow sun.
"We drew this for you," Aiden murmured, looking down shyly. "So you don't forget to come home."

Marina squeezed the boys tightly, hiding her tears in Aiden's shoulder. As Miles watched the three of them, a fierce protective instinct flared in his chest—a feeling he hadn't experienced since his wife passed away. But as he looked down at his phone, a new text message from Arthur shattered the brief warmth:
Boss, the SUV belongs to Vance Pharmaceuticals. The owner is Julian Vance—Marina's half-brother. She isn't just a housekeeper, Miles. She's the missing heiress to the largest medical estate in the state.
