Chapter 1 - The Cold Truth of the Screen

The silence that blanketed the marble reception desk of the Grand Regent was thick, heavy, and suffocating. Patricia’s fingers hovered above the mechanical keyboard, frozen mid-air, while Karla’s smug expression dissolved into a mask of pure panic. On the glowing monitor, the name Ethan Vance didn't just represent an executive corporate reservation; it was flagged with a triple-red security clearance code.

In the database of Vance International Holdings, that specific clearance belonged to only one person: the founder, chairman, and sole proprietor of the entire luxury brand.

"Is there an issue?" Ethan asked. His voice remained incredibly quiet, a hushed baritone designed not to disturb the little girl whose breathing rose and fell in a warm, rhythmic puff against his neck.

"Mr... Mr. Vance," Patricia stammered, her voice cracking as she desperately tried to find her breath. The patronizing smirk she had worn seconds ago was completely gone, replaced by a sickly, pale sweat that broke out along her hairline. "I... I apologize. The system... there was a delay in the database synchronization. I didn't see the executive override."

"You didn't look," Ethan corrected her, his tone devoid of anger but carrying the chilling weight of a gavel hitting a block of solid oak. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to. "And when my daughter and I first walked in, you didn't see a guest. You saw a leather jacket, a faded backpack, and a man you assumed didn't belong in your lobby."

Karla stepped forward, her hands shaking as she tried to intercede. "Sir, please understand, we have a very strict security protocol during the annual corporate gala. We have high-profile dignitaries, politicians, and CEOs staying on every floor. We have to be extremely careful about—"

"About who you treat like a human being?" Ethan interrupted, turning his dark, tired eyes toward her.

Karla went silent, her throat contracting as she swallowed hard.

Ethan turned his attention to Lupita, the housekeeper who was still standing nearby. She had stayed, her hands clasped in front of her simple, faded blue uniform, watching the scene unfold with a mixture of confusion and quiet worry.

"Lupita," Ethan said, his expression softening instantly. "Thank you."

"Of course, sir," she murmured, offering a small, respectful tilt of her head. "I... I was only doing what any decent person should do. Your little girl... she looks so beautiful, but so tired. She deserves a warm bed."

"She does," Ethan whispered, adjusting his grip on Lily. The roses in his hand brushed against his forearm, their crumpled red petals dropping a faint, sweet scent into the sterile, air-conditioned draft of the lobby. "Could you do me a favor, Lupita? Could you accompany us up to Suite 904? I believe I'll need a vase for these flowers, and I would prefer if you were the one to assist us."

"It would be my privilege, Mr. Vance," Lupita replied.

Patricia quickly grabbed a gold-plated key card, her hands trembling so violently she nearly dropped it onto the counter. She slid it across the marble toward him as if it were a burning coal. "Your key, Mr. Vance. The express elevator is located behind the central pillar. I will personally notify the general manager of your arrival immediately—"

"Don't," Ethan said, picking up the key card with his free hand. "I will speak with Mr. Sterling when I am ready. For now, you will keep this desk quiet. If my daughter is woken up by any unnecessary commotion, we will have a very different conversation."

Without waiting for their response, Ethan turned away from the desk. With Lupita walking respectfully a half-step behind him, he carried his sleeping daughter toward the gilded elevators, leaving the two receptionists staring after him in absolute, career-ending dread.
