Chapter 7 - The Confrontation in the Boardroom
At midnight, the grand ballroom began to empty, the music fading into a quiet, late-night hum.
Upstairs, on the tenth floor, the executive boardroom was bathed in the cool, blue light of the Chicago night. The massive glass table was surrounded by the twelve members of the board of directors, including Victoria and Arthur Sterling.
Ethan sat at the head of the table, his tuxedo jacket removed, his shirt sleeves rolled up to his forearms. He looked tired, but his eyes were sharp and focused.
"Let’s get straight to the point," Ethan said, sliding a thick leather folder into the center of the table. "The proposed acquisition of the Manhattan Crown Hotel in New York. The board has been pushing for this for six months. I want to know why."
Victoria leaned forward, her emerald rings clicking against the glass table. "The Manhattan Crown is an iconic property, Ethan. It is valued at over four hundred million dollars, and acquiring it would solidify our dominance in the luxury market. It's a gold mine."
"It's a sinking ship, Victoria," Ethan said, leaning back in his chair. "I had my personal financial analysts look into their operational reports over the last forty-eight hours. The Manhattan Crown has a forty percent turnover rate in their staff. They have three pending labor lawsuits regarding unpaid overtime, and their guest satisfaction ratings have dropped by fifteen percent in the last year because of 'indifferent service.'"
"Those are minor operational details, Ethan!" Victoria argued, her voice rising. "We can easily restructure the staff once we take control! The real estate value alone is worth the investment!"
"We don't restructure staff by treating them like numbers on a spreadsheet, Victoria," Ethan said, his voice flat. "A hotel is not just a building. It's the people who run it. If the staff are unhappy, the guests will feel it. And if the guests feel it, the luxury brand is dead. I am vetoing the acquisition."
The boardroom went silent. Several board members looked at each other in shock, while Victoria’s face turned white with fury.
"You can't do this, Ethan!" she hissed. "We have spent months negotiating this deal! The board has already voted in favor of it!"
"The board's vote is advisory, Victoria," Ethan reminded her, his voice carrying the weight of a stone monument. "I hold fifty-two percent of the voting shares. My decision is final. We will not invest in any property that does not meet our standards of operational integrity and human dignity."
"This is ridiculous!" Victoria screamed, standing up from her chair. "You are letting your personal... emotions get in the way of business! Ever since Sarah died, you’ve been running this company like a grieving widow instead of a businessman!"
The mention of Sarah’s name made the entire room freeze.
Arthur Sterling looked at his sister with wide, terrified eyes, silently begging her to stop, but Victoria was too angry to care.
Ethan slowly stood up from his chair.
The silence in the room became so heavy that several board members looked away, unable to meet his gaze. He walked down the length of the glass table, stopping directly in front of Victoria.
"My wife," Ethan said, his voice incredibly quiet, but carrying a vibration that made the glass table feel like it was humming, "was the one who taught me that a business is only as strong as the people who build it. She was the one who insisted we build our staff housing first before we built the grand lobby of this very hotel. If you ever use her memory to justify your own greed again, Victoria... I will not just buy you out. I will destroy your reputation in every financial sector in this country. Do you understand me?"

Victoria looked into Ethan's eyes and saw the absolute, terrifying truth of his words. She sank slowly back into her leather chair, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water, but no sound came out.
"This meeting is adjourned," Ethan said. "Arthur, have my car brought around. Lily and I are leaving for the airport."
