Chapter 8 - The Legacy of Sarah

The flight back to their home in Portland was quiet.

Lily slept peacefully in the private cabin of the corporate jet, her head resting on Ethan's lap, her small hand still clutching Barnaby. Outside the window, the clouds drifted past like white mountains under the morning sun.

Ethan looked down at his daughter, his heart filled with a deep, quiet peace.

They had faced the storm. They had stood by Sarah’s grave, they had confronted the ghosts of the past, and they had protected the integrity of the empire they had built together.

He reached into his backpack, pulling out a small, leather-bound journal that had belonged to Sarah. He opened it to the first page, where her elegant, flowing handwriting read:

“To my Ethan—the man who builds castles out of stone, but homes out of love. Never forget that the most important things in life are the ones we cannot count. Build a world where everyone has a place to rest, and our daughter will always know the way home.”

A single tear fell from Ethan's cheek, landing on the paper, dampening the blue ink slightly. He smiled, wiping it away with his thumb.

"I won't forget, Sarah," he whispered into the quiet cabin. "I promise."

The jet began its slow descent into the Portland airport, the green forests of the Pacific Northwest rising up to greet them like a warm, familiar blanket.
