Chapter 2 - The UnmaskingThe heavy silence hanging over the marble front desk of the Grand Regent was suffocating.

Patricia’s fingers hovered over her mechanical keyboard, frozen mid-stroke. Her eyes remained locked on the glowing blue monitor screen where the words VANCE, ETHAN — OWNER / EXECUTIVE BOARD CHAIRMAN — CONFIRMED flashed in bold red letters across the corporate internal portal.
Beside her, Karla leaned over to glance at the screen. The smirk on her face dissolved instantly into sheer terror. Her jaw dropped, her breath catching audibly in her throat.
"Mr.... Mr. Vance?" Patricia stammered, her voice dropping into a high-pitched, trembling squeak. "I... I don't understand. The system... it didn't flag the primary profile..."
Ethan didn't raise his voice. He didn't slam his hand on the marble desk. He simply adjusted six-year-old Lily against his shoulder, making sure her head rested comfortably against his neck, shielded from the cold lobby air conditioning.
"The system didn't fail, Patricia," Ethan said, his voice quiet, calm, and weighted with absolute authority. "You failed. You looked at a worn leather jacket, a tired little girl, and a bouquet of airport roses, and you decided I was unworthy of respect before you even typed a single letter."
Lupita stood beside the desk, her eyes widening slightly as she processed the revelation. She had worked as a lead housekeeper at the Grand Regent for eight years, silently enduring the condescension of front-desk supervisors like Patricia and Karla. She had never met Ethan Vance in person—he rarely visited without a full executive entourage—but everyone knew the legend of the widowed founder who had built the Regent Hospitality Group from a single renovated boutique inn into a multi-billion-dollar luxury empire.
"Mr. Vance," Karla blurted out, her hands shaking as she reached for a master keycard. "Please, let me personally escort you to Suite 904! I'll carry your bags! I'll have room service bring up complimentary champagne and fruit immediately!"
Ethan held up a single hand, stopping her in her tracks.
"Do not wake my daughter," he commanded softly. "And do not offer me champagne to cover up a complete absence of human empathy."
Ethan turned his gaze toward Lupita. The sharp, cold edge in his eyes softened into genuine appreciation.
"Lupita, isn't it?" Ethan asked.
"Yes, sir. Lupita Morales," she replied quietly, holding herself with dignified grace.
"Where is the master key for the Ninth Floor Executive Wing kept?"
"In the manager's secure drawer behind the main register, sir," Lupita answered immediately. "I have clearance for the floor maintenance key."
"Good," Ethan said. "Please retrieve the key for Suite 904, fetch my single piece of luggage from the entryway rack, and escort us to the room yourself."
Patricia swallowed hard, her face ghost-white. "Mr. Vance, I can call Mr. Sterling, the General Manager! He's upstairs in the rooftop lounge hosting the corporate gala board members! He will want to welcome you personally!"
Ethan paused, turning his cold grey eyes back onto Patricia and Karla.
"Tell Julian Sterling he has until 8:00 a.m. tomorrow morning to prepare a full operational audit of every customer-facing employee at this property," Ethan said flatly. "And tell him that as of this exact second, neither of you is permitted to touch a computer terminal, check in a guest, or step foot behind this front desk."
"Mr. Vance, please!" Karla gasped, tears springing to her eyes. "We were just following policy regarding unconfirmed reservations!"
"Policy dictates courtesy to every human being who steps through those doors," Ethan replied. "You gave me contempt."

Without waiting for another word, Ethan walked toward the private executive elevators, with Lupita carrying his faded backpack and trailing respectfully behind him.
Behind them at the desk, Patricia sank into her leather chair, burying her face in her trembling hands as the true magnitude of her mistake crashed down upon her.
