Chapter 1 - THE TEMPORARY GUARDIAN

Rebecca Sloan set down her blue mug on her cluttered desk, looking at Daniel over the rim of her glasses. Her eyes held the weary skepticism of a woman who had seen wealthy patrons make grand promises only to disappear when the reality of bureaucratic red tape set in.

"Emergency foster placement for siblings isn't guaranteed in the same home, Mr. Mercer," Rebecca explained softly. "Our county system is stretched to its absolute limit tonight. Emma would likely go to a temporary shelter in Aurora, and Noah—being ten weeks old—would need a specialized infant foster home in South Denver. They will be separated."

"No," Daniel said immediately. The word came out stronger than he intended, echoing off the thin drywall of the small office.

He thought of Emma sitting on the cold concrete curb outside, holding her little brother like he was her entire universe, terrified that someone would tear him from her arms. He remembered his finger held tightly in Noah's tiny grip.

"There has to be another option," Daniel insisted, resting his large hands flat on Rebecca's desk. "Can't their mother sign a temporary care authorization?"

"Rachel is heavily sedated in the ICU right now," Rebecca replied. "And even if she were lucid, temporary voluntary guardianship requires a vetted, background-checked individual. It isn't something we hand out to a stranger who walked in off the street twenty minutes ago, no matter how much money you have."

Daniel pulled his leather wallet from his jacket. He didn't offer cash—he knew better than that—but pulled out his state identification, his personal credit cards, and a sleek black card featuring a direct line to his private legal counsel.

"My name is Daniel Mercer," he said quietly, his tone dropping into the steady, unyielding register he used when negotiating fifty-million-dollar real estate acquisitions. "I own three commercial properties within ten blocks of this hospital. My legal team can have a verified background check, personal references, and financial guarantees on your desk within forty-five minutes. I have a six-bedroom home in Cherry Creek that has been empty for five years. I will pay for a licensed pediatric private nurse to stay on-site twenty-four hours a day until Rachel is discharged."

Rebecca stared at him, taken aback by the absolute conviction in his voice. "Mr. Mercer... why are you doing this? You don't know this family."

Daniel looked out the small office window toward the waiting room, where Emma was carefully rocking Noah's stroller, her small shoulders hunched under her oversized purple sweatshirt.

"Five years ago," Daniel said softly, the old phantom pain tightening in his chest, "I lost my wife. I spent five years living in a house that feels like a monument to things I couldn't save. Tonight, I saw an eight-year-old girl protecting her brother on a curb outside your hospital. I am not going to let this system tear those children apart."

Rebecca looked at Daniel for a long, silent moment. She saw no arrogance in his eyes—only a deep, quiet grief that had suddenly found a righteous purpose.

She picked up her desk phone and dialed her supervisor. "I need an expedited background verification and an emergency short-term custody order for a private placement. Yes... right now."
