Chapter 7 - SHADOWS OF THE PAST

While Rachel and Daniel’s bond grew stronger, an unexpected storm was gathering on the horizon.
One afternoon, while Rachel was attending her graphic design class, she walked out of the campus library to find a man standing beside her car in the parking lot.
He was tall, thin, with disheveled blonde hair and a nervous, twitchy posture.
It was Nathan Vance—Rachel’s ex-partner and the biological father of Noah, who had abandoned her six months into her pregnancy after stealing her savings to pay off gambling debts.
Rachel stopped in her tracks, her blood running cold. "Nathan...?"
Nathan turned around, offering a slick, manipulative smile. "Hey, Rach. Long time no see."
Rachel clutched her books tightly against her chest, taking a step back. "What are you doing here? How did you find me?"
"Denver isn't that big, Rach," Nathan said, leaning against her car. "I heard a rumor around town that my ex-girlfriend suddenly moved into a luxury townhouse in South Denver and drives a brand-new car. Word is, you scored yourself a rich older benefactor—that real estate guy, Daniel Mercer."
"Get away from my car, Nathan," Rachel said, her voice shaking with anger. "You abandoned me when I was six months pregnant. You took every cent I had!"
Nathan stepped closer, his smile vanishing into an ugly, desperate scowl. "I made a mistake, okay?! But Noah is my son! I have legal rights!"
"You didn't even sign the birth certificate!" Rachel shouted, tears of frustration burning her eyes.
"Maybe not yet," Nathan sneered. "But I can file a paternity suit tomorrow. I can drag you, your rich boyfriend, and the kids through family court for months... unless, of course, Mr. Mercer wants to settle this quietly. Say... fifty thousand dollars for me to sign away my parental rights forever?"
Rachel stared at him in utter disgust. "You're trying to blackmail us?"
"I'm offering a transaction, Rach," Nathan sneered, tapping his phone against his palm. "Tell your billionaire boyfriend he has forty-eight hours to call my lawyer, or I'm taking Noah away from you."
Nathan turned and strolled away across the parking lot.
Rachel stood beside her car, her body shaking uncontrollably, her chest burning with a terrifying panic.
She drove straight to Daniel’s office at Mercer Urban Development.
When she burst into his executive suite on the top floor, crying and breathless, Daniel immediately stood up from his desk, dismissing his managers from the room.
"Rachel, what happened?!" Daniel asked, rushing over and holding her shoulders.
Through her tears, Rachel explained Nathan's sudden appearance, his threats regarding Noah, and his demand for fifty thousand dollars.
"I'm so sorry, Daniel..." Rachel wept against his chest. "He's going to ruin everything... he's going to drag us through court..."

Daniel wrapped his strong arms around her, kissing the top of her head. His eyes went dark, cold, and razor-sharp—not with panic, but with the terrifying resolve of a man who protected what was his.
"He isn't going to ruin anything, Rachel," Daniel said softly, his voice steady as iron. "Nathan Vance just made the biggest mistake of his life."
