Chapter 3 - THE AWAKENING IN ICU

At 7:00 AM the following morning, Daniel entered the Intensive Care Unit at Riverside Medical Center.
The room was quiet except for the steady rhythmic beep of the heart monitor. In the center of the room lay Rachel Bennett.
She looked far younger than twenty-seven. Her face was pale, dark shadows beneath her eyes, her wrists thin where the IV lines were taped to her skin. Her dark brown hair—the exact shade of Emma’s—was spread across the white hospital pillow.
As Daniel stepped near the bed, her eyelids fluttered open. She blinked against the morning sunlight, her eyes darting frantically around the unfamiliar room.
"Emma...?" Rachel gasped, her voice hoarse and barely audible. "Noah... where are my babies...?"
She tried to sit up, but the monitors began to beep rapidly as her heart rate spiked in panic.
"Mrs. Bennett, please, lie back," Daniel said quickly, stepping into her line of sight, keeping his hands low and calm. "Your children are safe. They are completely safe."
Rachel looked at him with wild, protective panic. "Who are you?! Where are my kids?! Did the state take them?!"
"My name is Daniel Mercer," he said gently, pulling a chair closer to her bed so she wouldn't strain her neck. "I found Emma sitting outside the hospital lobby last night holding Noah. She was terrified they were going to separate them."
Rachel choked back a sob, covering her face with her thin hands. "Oh God... Emma... she tried so hard to help me... I couldn't get out of bed after the fever hit... I told her to wait in the lobby..."
"I spoke with the hospital social worker, Rebecca Sloan," Daniel continued, keeping his voice low and soothing. "The county was planning to place them in separate emergency foster homes last night. I intervened. I signed an emergency short-term guardianship order."
Rachel froze, lowering her hands, staring at him in sheer terror. "You took my kids? Are you adopting them?! You can't take my babies!"
"No, Rachel," Daniel said firmly, meeting her terrified gaze. "I am not taking your children. They are at my home in Cherry Creek right now. A licensed nurse is feeding Noah. Emma is sleeping in a warm bed. Nobody is adopting them, and nobody is separating them. I am holding custody for you until you are healthy enough to take them home."
Rachel stared at the stranger sitting beside her bed. She looked at his expensive suit, his polished shoes, and then at the profound, quiet empathy in his face.
"Why...?" Rachel whispered, her eyes filling with tears. "Why would a wealthy man like you do that for a stranger?"
Daniel looked out the hospital window, watching the morning traffic move through Denver.
"Because five years ago, my life fell apart in a single second," Daniel revealed softly. "And last night, your daughter reminded me that sometimes, the only thing keeping a person alive is knowing someone gives a damn."

Rachel closed her eyes, tears streaming down her pale cheeks as she let out a long, shuddering breath of profound relief. "Thank you... oh God, thank you..."
"Now," Daniel said, standing up and smoothing his coat. "Focus on healing. I'm going to take care of the rest."
