Chapter 5 - The Arrival of Marcus Vance

While the city's headlines the next morning were dominated by the dramatic downfall of the Moretti crime syndicate, a quieter, far more dangerous storm was brewing on the thirty-ninth floor of the Vale Tower.
It was 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
I sat in the penthouse library, reading a book on veterinary neurology, while Atlas lay across my feet, chewing on a bone.
The private elevator chime sounded—a rare occurrence, as no one was permitted on the penthouse floors without direct authorization from Adrian or Damian.
The doors opened.
Damian stepped out, followed by a man I hadn't seen in four long, agonizing years.
Marcus Vance.
My stepbrother looked older, his dark hair slicked back with expensive pomade, wearing a tailored three-piece Italian suit that reeked of vanity and unearned wealth. His thin lips were twisted into a cold, arrogant smile as his eyes swept over the luxurious marble foyer, finally landing on me sitting in the velvet armchair.
"Hello, Nora," Marcus said, his voice smooth as oil, laced with that familiar, sickening condescension that used to make me lock my bedroom door at night. "Or should I call you 'Miss Hayes' now? You certainly played a clever game of hide-and-seek."
I froze, my hands tightening on the pages of my book until the paper tore slightly. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird.
Atlas felt my panic instantly. He let out a low, ominous growl, stepping over my legs to place his giant frame directly between me and Marcus.
Marcus scoffed, taking a step back from the dog. "Keep that beast away from me, Mr. Vale. I am a guest in your home."
"You are not a guest, Vance," Damian said, walking slowly behind Marcus toward the center of the room. His voice was dangerously soft. "You are an intruder who was escorted here by my security team from JFK Airport because you made the mistake of attempting to file an illegal custody writ against an employee of Vale Global."
Marcus straightened his tie, trying to maintain his aristocratic composure. "Nora is not just an employee, Mr. Vale. She is my legal ward under the terms of my late father's estate in Illinois. She fled our home four years ago, taking stolen corporate documents with her. I have every legal right to take her back to Chicago today."
"I took nothing!" I shouted, standing up from the armchair, my voice ringing clear through the high ceilings. "I took my own clothes, my mother's journal, and nothing else! You locked me in that house for two years after my mother died, Marcus! You tried to force me to sign away my mother's real estate trust!"
Marcus’s eyes flashed with venom. "You were an ungrateful child who needed discipline! My father gave your mother a roof over her head, and you repaid our family by running away like a thief!"
"Enough," Damian said.
The single word cut through the room like a steel blade.
Damian walked forward until he stood directly in front of Marcus Vance. Damian was four inches taller, his shoulders broader, his presence so overwhelming that Marcus involuntarily took a step back, his arrogant facade cracking.
"You speak to her with respect in my home," Damian whispered, his slate-gray eyes locking onto Marcus’s. "Or I will have my security toss you out of the forty-first-floor window."
"You can't threaten me, Vale!" Marcus blustered, pulling a leather document case from under his arm. "I have the Illinois state court order right here! I have federal jurisdiction!"
Damian didn't even look at the paper. He turned to Adrian, who walked out of the private office holding a thick, red-stamped federal dossier.
"Read him his reality, Adrian," Damian ordered.
Adrian opened the dossier. "Marcus Vance. Senior Partner of Vance Logistics Corporation. As of 9:00 a.m. this morning, the Illinois Securities and Exchange Commission has frozen all corporate accounts of Vance Logistics following an anonymous tip detailing twelve years of offshore tax evasion, pension fund embezzlement, and fraudulent probate filings regarding the late Sarah Hayes-Vance's estate."
Marcus turned ghostly pale. "What... what are you talking about? That's impossible!"
"It was impossible until three days ago," Damian said calmly. "Until I hired the top forensic accounting firm in North America to audit your family's records. Your firm is bankrupt, Vance. Your assets are seized. And by four o'clock this afternoon, a federal warrant will be issued for your arrest in Chicago for probate fraud and grand larceny."
Marcus stumbled back, his eyes wide with horror as he realized his entire life, his wealth, and his power had been completely crushed in less than seventy-two hours.
"You... you did this for her?" Marcus stammered, pointing a shaking finger at me. "She's just a nobody! A runaway orphan!"
Damian stepped forward, grabbing Marcus by his lapels, pulling him up until the man was standing on his tiptoes.
"She is Nora Hayes," Damian rasped, his voice filled with a fierce, absolute devotion that echoed in my soul. "And if you ever speak her name, look at her photograph, or step into the state of New York again, I won't use the courts to destroy you. Do you understand me?"

Damian shoved Marcus backward into Adrian's waiting guards. "Get him out of my sight."
The guards dragged the sputtering, broken man into the elevator, the heavy brass doors sliding shut, erasing the ghost of my past forever.
