Chapter 9 - The Promise on the Terrace

The gala ended after midnight, but neither Damian nor I was ready to sleep.

We returned to the penthouse. The city outside was quiet, blanketed under a light, powdery dusting of the season's first snow that fell softly over Central Park.

I had changed out of my formal gown into a soft cream cashmere sweater and long skirt, sitting on the heated leather sofa on the private forty-first-floor glass terrace. Atlas lay at my feet, fast asleep, his chest rising and falling in deep, peaceful rhythms.

Damian walked out onto the terrace carrying two mugs of hot tea. He handed one to me and sat down beside me, pulling a soft throw blanket over both of our legs.

We sat in comfortable, contented silence for several minutes, watching the snow dance through the golden streetlamps forty floors below.

"What are you thinking about?" Damian asked softly, sliding his arm around my shoulders, pulling me close against his chest.

"I was thinking about the night Adrian came to my clinic," I said, a soft smile touching my lips. "He offered me one hundred thousand dollars for one night. I thought he was arrogant, absurd, and dangerous."

Damian chuckled softly, pressing a kiss against my temple. "Adrian told me you were the most stubborn, disrespectful person he had ever spoken to."

"I was terrified," I admitted. "I thought if I let a powerful man into my life again, I'd lose the little bit of freedom I had fought so hard to build."

Damian turned slightly, taking both of my hands in his. His face was earnest, filled with a deep, reverent tenderness.

"You never lost your freedom, Nora," Damian said quietly. "You gave this penthouse its soul. You gave my dog his life back. And you gave me a reason to look forward to every sunrise."

He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined mahogany box.

My breath hitched in my throat.

Damian opened the box. Inside rested a delicate, stunning ring—not a loud, ostentatious diamond meant to impress socialites, but a custom-crafted band of platinum, set with a rare gray sapphire that matched the exact color of Atlas's eyes, flanked by two brilliant white diamonds.

"Nora Hayes," Damian said, his voice deep, steady, and full of raw emotion. "You saved my home. You saved my family. I don't want a contract with you. I want a lifetime. Will you marry me?"

I looked at the ring, then up into the dark slate-gray eyes of the man who had stood between me and every shadow of my past—the man who had built a fortress not to hide me, but to give me a stage to shine.

"Yes," I whispered, tears of pure happiness spilling down my cheeks. "Yes, Damian. Absolutely yes."

Damian slipped the ring onto my finger. It fit perfectly.

He pulled me into his arms, pressing his lips to mine in a long, passionate kiss that tasted of sweet tea, winter snow, and absolute forever.

Below us, Atlas woke up, let out a soft, joyful huff, and rested his massive head across both of our laps, anchoring the three of us together in the warm, golden light of our penthouse sanctuary.
