Chapter 2 - The Chain of Custody

The hospital room erupted into a whirlwind of security guards, yellow hazard tape, and screaming lawyers within twenty minutes.
Four armed hospital security officers stood at the door, their hands resting near their belts, preventing Mark and Claire from stepping within five feet of the bassinet. Mark was pacing the length of the room like a caged animal, his cell phone pressed glued to his ear as he shouted at his legal team.
"I don't give a damn about the ethics board!" Mark roared into the receiver, his expensive silk tie untied and hanging limply around his neck. "We funded the entire IVF cycle! We paid three hundred thousand dollars to the Reston Clinic! The genetic material was acquired through a legal broker!"
"A broker that is currently under federal investigation for illegal organ and tissue procurement, Mr. Vance," a stern voice echoed from the doorway.
A tall woman in a dark gray suit walked into the room, holding a leather briefcase. Behind her was a lead physician wearing a lab coat and a silver badge that identified him as Dr. Jonathan Mercer, Chief of Hospital Administration.
"I am Special Agent Sarah Lin from the State Attorney General's Medical Fraud Unit," the woman announced, flashing a silver badge. "And this facility is now an active crime scene."
Claire sank back onto the hospital bed, her face gray. "Sarah... please. You don't understand. I can't carry my own children. My uterus has severe scarring from my surgery three years ago. Mark's family line... they have a legacy trust. If we didn't produce a biological heir by Mark's thirty-fifth birthday, his uncle's estate defaults to his cousins!"
I stood by the bassinet, my hand hovering an inch above the baby's blanket. I was terrified to touch her, terrified that if I reached out, this nightmare would somehow solidify into something permanent.
"You used my eggs," I said, my voice shaking so hard I could barely form the words. "You knew I was struggling with my student loans. You knew I went to that clinic in North Carolina three years ago because I trusted them to help infertile couples in secret. You systematically hunted down my genetic profile!"
"We saved you!" Claire snapped, her eyes flashing with a sudden, ugly malice that I had never seen before in my thirty years of knowing her. "You were drowning in debt, Maya! Living in that pathetic one-bedroom apartment in Milwaukee, working sixty-hour weeks as a junior floor nurse! We paid off your clinic account through an anonymous grant! We funded your life!"
"You didn't fund my life, Claire!" I screamed, the tears finally bursting through the dam of my restraint. "You harvested me! You bought my flesh and blood like a commodity on an auction block! And then you had the nerve to invite me into this delivery room so you could watch me suffer while you signed papers to erase me forever!"
"It was supposed to be clean!" Claire sobbed, turning her face into her hands. "The contract said that if you held the baby without sterile clearance, it breached the surrogate-donor quarantine act! It was supposed to make you legally unfit for custody under the state's biological contact laws! The lawyer said if you touched her skin before the paperwork was signed, we could claim you contaminated the infant and revoke your visitation rights forever!"
Dr. Mercer shook his head in absolute horror. "That law applies to high-risk commercial surrogate pathogens in unaccredited overseas clinics, Mrs. Vance. It has zero legal standing in an accredited American hospital. What your attorney attempted to pull off here is a fraudulent coercion scheme."
Agent Lin opened her briefcase and pulled out a stack of sealed evidence bags. "Mark Vance, Claire Vance. As of right now, the state is placing a temporary emergency hold on infant Jane Doe. Neither of you are permitted to leave this hospital wing. The child is being transferred to the neonatal intensive care unit under full protective custody until a emergency family court judge determines biological rights."
Mark took a step toward Agent Lin, his finger pointed accusingly at her face. "Do you have any idea who my father is? Vance Logistics owns half the transport docks on Lake Michigan! You take one step toward that baby with a ward order, and I will have your badge by midnight!"
"Try me, Mr. Vance," Agent Lin replied coldly. "I've put three hospital CEOs in federal prison this year alone. Your transport docks don't scare me."
Two pediatric nurses stepped into the room, gently wheeling a specialized transport incubator. With extreme care, Nurse Evelyn lifted the baby out of the plastic bassinet.
As Evelyn moved toward the door, the baby began to cry—a tiny, frantic wail that cut straight through the tense silence of the room.
Without thinking, I took a step forward.
The baby’s tiny fist flailed in the air, reaching out blindly. Her eyes squeezed shut, her little face turning red.
"Wait," I choked out.
Evelyn stopped. She looked at Dr. Mercer, then at Agent Lin.
Agent Lin looked at the emergency guardianship papers in her hand, then looked at me—a woman standing in scrub pants, exhausted, terrified, and bleeding internally from the ultimate betrayal.
"Miss Lin," Agent Lin said gently to me. "According to the preliminary laboratory match on file from the clinic transfer, you are the verified genetic mother of this child. Until the court hearing tomorrow morning... you have the legal right to accompany her to the NICU."
Claire let out a shriek of pure rage from the bed. "No! Don't you touch her! She's mine! I carried her for nine months!"
I didn't look back at Claire. I didn't look at Mark.
I stepped up to the incubator, reached inside through the rubber portal, and let my pinky finger slide into the baby's tiny, searching hand.

Her grip was instantaneous. Her crying stopped instantly, her small chest settling into a soft, quiet rhythm.
"I've got you," I whispered, tears dripping off my chin onto the plastic frame. "I've got you, my little girl. Nobody is ever going to put a contract on you again."
