Chapter 9 - The Trial of the Fallen

Six months later.

The Federal District Court of Northern Illinois was packed to absolute capacity. Over fifty news cameras were lined up outside the courthouse steps as the largest medical corruption trial in the history of the state reached its final verdict.

I sat in the front row of the gallery, holding five-month-old Nora in my arms.

She was dressed in a little white cotton dress, her wide brown eyes looking around the grand courtroom with curious wonder. She was healthy, thriving, and weighed a perfect sixteen pounds.

Beside me sat Julian Ross, holding my hand tightly under the wooden pew.

At the defense table sat Arthur Vance Senior, Mark Vance, and Claire Vance.

All three of them were wearing dark orange federal inmate jumpsuits, their hands tethered to their waists by steel chains.

Claire looked completely broken. Her hair was dull and unstyled, her face thin and sunken, her eyes filled with a hollow, dead despair. She wouldn't look at me. Every time her eyes flicked toward Nora, she flinched as if struck by a physical blow.

Mark sat beside his father, trembling nervously, his high-priced defense team looking defeated and exhausted after three months of brutal federal prosecution.

Judge Robert Vance (no relation) stepped up to the bench, holding a thick stack of jury verdict forms.

"In the matter of the United States versus Arthur Vance Senior, Mark Vance, and Claire Vance," the judge announced, his deep voice filling the silent room. "Will the defendants please stand."

The three defendants stood up awkwardly, their chains clinking loudly in the quiet space.

"On Count One: Federal Conspiracy to Commit Medical Fraud... we find the defendants... GUILTY."

A collective gasp echoed through the gallery.

"On Count Two: Operation of an Unaccredited Biological Research Facility... GUILTY."

"On Count Three: Falsification of State Birth Records and Identity Theft... GUILTY."

"On Count Four: Felony Exploitation of a Donor... GUILTY."

Claire burst into loud, hysterical sobs, collapsing back into her chair, her face buried against the cold wooden table. Mark closed his eyes, his head dropping to his chest in total defeat.

Judge Robert Vance leaned forward over his bench, looking down at the fallen dynasty with profound judgment.

"Arthur Vance Senior," the judge declared. "For your masterminding of an illegal human research enterprise and your systematic abuse of power, you are hereby sentenced to twenty-five years in federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole."

"Mark Vance, for your active participation in wire fraud and medical record forgery, you are sentenced to twelve years."

"Claire Vance, for your role in the conspiracy and your fraudulent attempts to coerce an innocent party under distress, you are sentenced to seven years."

The judge slammed his gavel down hard.

THWACK!

"Court is adjourned."

The gallery erupted into applause as news reporters scrambled out the doors to break the story. Federal marshals immediately stepped up, gripping the defendants by their orange shoulders to escort them toward the holding cells.

As Claire was being led away in chains, she paused near the gallery divider.

She looked at me—her sister, the woman she had tried to reduce to an organic factory. Her lips trembled, tears streaming down her hollow cheeks.

"Maya..." Claire choked out, her voice raspy and broken. "Maya... please... I'm sorry... I was so afraid of losing Mark..."

I stood up slowly, holding Nora securely against my chest.

I looked at Claire—not with hatred, not with revenge, but with a quiet, profound pity for a woman who had traded her soul, her family, and her freedom for a lie built on money and control.

"I forgive you, Claire," I said softly, my voice steady and calm. "For my own peace, I forgive you. But you will never be a part of Nora's life. And you will never touch us again."

Claire sobbed, her head hanging low as the marshals escorted her through the heavy iron doors, closing them shut with a final, echoing clack.
