Chapter 4 - The Deposition of Lies

The Cook County Family Courthouse smelled of old wax, stale coffee, and ancient marble. Rain lashed against the tall, arched windows of Room 402 as the storm outside matched the fury brewing inside the courtroom.

I sat at the defense table next to Julian Ross. I was wearing a borrowed navy blue blazer and dark slacks that Julian’s paralegal had brought for me. Across the aisle sat Claire and Mark Vance, flanked by a team of four high-priced corporate defense attorneys led by Richard Sterling—a man known in Chicago legal circles as 'The Shredder.'

Claire sat in a wheelchair, draped in an expensive cashmere shawl, looking fragile and tear-streaked. She was playing the role of the grieving, devastated mother to perfection.

At the front of the room, Judge Beatrice Thorne sat behind the high mahogany bench. She was an elderly woman with silver hair pulled into a tight bun and sharp, piercing hazel eyes that seemed capable of seeing through steel.

"We are here on an emergency petition for temporary wardship and protective custody regarding infant Jane Doe, born August 17 at Northwestern Memorial," Judge Thorne announced, her gavel resting loosely in her palm. "Counselor Sterling, you have the floor."

Richard Sterling stood up smoothly, buttoning his suit jacket. "Your Honor, this is a tragic case of a bitter, financially envious young woman trying to weaponize a medical oversight to extort my clients."

He turned to look at me, a cold, practiced sneer on his lips.

"Maya Lin is a junior floor nurse with massive personal debt," Sterling declared, holding up a stack of financial printouts. "For three years, she has harbored resentment toward her sister, Mrs. Claire Vance, who built a successful life with her husband. When Mrs. Vance suffered from severe reproductive complications, she entered into a legal, private donor arrangement. Maya Lin was paid five thousand dollars to act as a supportive labor coach."

Sterling slammed the papers onto his table. "The moment the child was born, Maya Lin suffered a psychotic break. She seized the infant, refused to let the mother hold her child, and fabricated a story about a forged contract to line her own pockets with a settlement payout!"

I gasped, gripping the edge of the wooden table. "That’s a lie!"

"Silence in the gallery!" Judge Thorne snapped, her sharp eyes flicking over to me. "Miss Lin, you will have your turn. Proceed, Mr. Sterling."

"We have sworn affidavits from the clinic staff in North Carolina," Sterling continued smoothly, handing a document to the court bailiff. "These documents clearly show that Maya Lin willingly signed a universal release form three years ago, relinquishing all genetic claims to any future embryos created from her donated eggs. She knew exactly where those eggs were going."

Julian Ross stood up calmly. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't make a grand gesture. He simply pulled a thick yellow envelope from his leather briefcase.

"Your Honor," Julian said quietly. "My learned colleague, Mr. Sterling, has just submitted state exhibit B—the supposed universal release form signed by my client in North Carolina."

"I have," Sterling said smugly. "It is fully notarized."

"It is indeed notarized," Julian agreed. "By a notary public named Arthur Pendelton. The same Arthur Pendelton who was arrested by federal marshals three hours ago at O'Hare International Airport while attempting to board a flight to Dubai."

A sudden, sharp hush fell over the courtroom.

Claire’s breath hitched loudly. Mark’s head snapped toward his lead attorney, his face instantly turning pale.

"What did you just say, Mr. Ross?" Judge Thorne asked, leaning forward over her bench, her hazel eyes narrowing dangerously.

"Dr. Arthur Pendelton was the medical director of the Reston Clinic," Julian explained, stepping into the center aisle. "Three hours ago, under federal interrogation, Dr. Pendelton signed a full confession. He admitted that eighteen months ago, Mark Vance wired seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars to an offshore shell company in the Cayman Islands under the name 'Vance Holdings LLC.'"

Julian pulled a thermal fax printout from his envelope and presented it to the judge.

"That money was paid specifically to unlock my client’s private genetic file, forge her signature on a targeted transfer order, and ship her eggs directly to an unaccredited private IVF lab in downtown Chicago owned by Mark Vance’s cousin," Julian stated, his voice cutting through the courtroom like a razor. "This wasn't a standard donation, Your Honor. This was a targeted bio-theft executed by a wealthy couple who viewed a struggling young nurse as an organic factory for their trust-fund heir."

"Your Honor, this is hearsay!" Sterling shouted, standing up so fast his chair skidded across the floor. "Dr. Pendelton’s statements have not been cross-examined!"

"I have the wire transfer receipts signed by Mark Vance himself, Mr. Sterling," Julian replied calmly, pulling a second sheet from his file. "Along with an audio recording recovered from Dr. Pendelton’s office server. Would the court like to hear Mr. Vance instructing the doctor on how to trick my client into attending the birth today so they could force her to sign a post-partum liability waiver?"

Judge Thorne’s face turned from stern to utterly terrifying. She looked at Mark Vance, whose mouth was hanging open, sweat glistening on his forehead.

"Mr. Sterling," Judge Thorne said in a low, dangerous voice. "Are you telling me that your clients filed an emergency custody petition in my courtroom based on a forged transfer order from a doctor currently in federal custody?"

"Your... Your Honor... we were unaware of Dr. Pendelton's recent actions—" Sterling stuttered, his smooth, corporate armor completely shattering.

"Sit down, Mr. Sterling," Judge Thorne commanded.

She turned her gaze to Claire Vance. Claire was shrinking into her cashmere shawl, trembling violently, tears streaming down her face.

"Mrs. Vance," Judge Thorne said, her voice dripping with cold disgust. "Look at me."

Claire slowly raised her head, sobbing hysterically. "Judge... please... I just wanted a baby... Mark’s family... they were going to cut us out of the trust... I couldn't lose him..."

"You didn't just want a baby, Mrs. Vance," Judge Thorne spat. "You treated your own biological sister like a piece of livestock. You violated federal medical privacy laws, you committed fraud against this state, and then you had the sheer cruelty to drag her into a labor room for fourteen hours to watch you steal her child."

Judge Thorne raised her heavy wooden gavel.

"It is the order of this court that temporary emergency guardianship of infant Jane Doe—now officially registered as Nora Lin—is immediately awarded to the biological mother, Maya Lin!"

THWACK!

The sound of the gavel echoed through the courtroom like a gunshot.

"A full restraining order is hereby issued against Claire and Mark Vance," Judge Thorne added, pointing her gavel directly at Mark. "You are not to come within one thousand feet of Maya Lin or the infant. Furthermore, this court is referring the complete case file to the United States District Attorney for immediate criminal indictment on charges of conspiracy, medical fraud, and falsification of state records."

I buried my face in my hands, collapsing into my chair as deep, uncontrollable sobs racked my body. Julian Ross placed a gentle, comforting hand on my shoulder.

Across the room, two state police officers stepped up behind Mark Vance, pulling pair of heavy steel handcuffs from their utility belts.

"Mark Vance," the officer announced loudly over Claire's hysterical shrieks. "You are under arrest."
