Chapter 10 - The Promise Kept

Six months later.
The autumn air in Chicago was crisp, but the sun was bright, warming the red brick exterior of a beautiful, newly renovated three-story building on the North Side.
A large, professional sign hung over the entrance: Mercer Surveying & Community Center.
The building, purchased and fully funded through the court-ordered restitution of the two-million-dollar life insurance policy (which had grown with interest to nearly four million), belonged entirely to Sarah Mercer and her children.
Sarah stood on the front steps, looking healthy and vibrant. Her hair was clean and styled, her cheeks full of color, and she wore a warm, elegant wool coat. Beside her stood Marcus and Elena, smiling as they watched the crowd gather for the grand opening.
Lucy, Leo, and Toby were running through the front yard, laughing. Lucy was wearing a pair of bright red, brand-new leather boots, her matching socks neat and clean.
Daniel walked up the steps, carrying a heavy brass plaque. He mounted it beside the front doors.
The plaque read: In Loving Memory of Richard Mercer. His Vision, Our Foundation.
"It’s beautiful, Daniel," Sarah whispered, wiping a tear of joy from her eye as she looked at the plaque. "He would have loved this. A place where families can get help before they have to resort to stealing milk."
"We did it, Sarah," Daniel said, putting his arm around her shoulders. "The kids have a college fund, the business is thriving, and Thomas Vance is serving twenty-five years without parole. Richard’s legacy is finally safe."
Lucy ran up the steps, grabbing Daniel’s hand. "Uncle Daniel! Come on, they’re about to cut the ribbon!"

Daniel smiled down at his niece, his heart full. "I’m right behind you, Lucy."
They walked together into the warmth of the new building, leaving the cold shadows of the past behind them, stepping into a future built on justice, love, and a promise that had finally been kept.
