Chapter 5 - The Awakening

Back at the clinic, the steady beep of the heart monitor was the only sound in the private recovery room. Sarah Mercer’s eyes fluttered open.
The warmth of the room was unfamiliar. The clean, white sheets felt like a luxury she hadn't known in years. She turned her head slowly, her neck stiff, and saw her daughter Lucy sitting in a chair beside the bed, her head resting on the mattress, fast asleep.
In the corner of the room sat a large man she hadn't seen in twelve years. He was looking at a thick manila folder, his expression grim.
"Daniel?" Sarah's voice was a dry, raspy whisper.
Daniel looked up instantly. He set the folder down and moved to the bedside, pouring a cup of water from a pitcher. He gently helped her raise her head so she could take a few sips.
"Easy, Sarah. You're safe," Daniel said softly.
Sarah swallowed, the cool water soothing her raw throat. She looked at him, tears immediately filling her eyes. "How… how did you find us?"
"Lucy," Daniel said, gesturing to the sleeping girl. "She tried to steal some milk at Patel’s. She was looking out for her brothers. She’s a strong kid, Sarah. Just like Richard."
At the mention of her late husband's name, Sarah let out a ragged sob, covering her face with her thin hands. "Daniel, I didn't want to run. I didn't want to hide. But they told me if I stayed in Chicago, they would take my baby. Thomas Vance told me Richard had run up debts with dangerous people. He said they killed Richard, and they would kill us too if we didn't disappear."
Daniel’s blood ran cold. "Thomas told you that?"
"Yes. He gave us five thousand dollars and told us to leave the state. He said it was all that was left of Richard's accounts. We went to Indiana, then Ohio, but the money ran out so fast. I tried to work, but without my papers—Thomas kept all of Richard's official files—I couldn't get a real job. We ended up back here, hiding in the slums, just trying to survive."
Daniel reached out and took her hand. Her fingers were rough, scarred from years of manual labor.
"He lied to you, Sarah," Daniel said, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and profound sorrow. "Richard didn't have debts. He had a two-million-dollar life insurance policy. Thomas forged your signature, stole the money, and used it to launch his real estate company. He used your husband’s death to build his empire."

Sarah stared at him, her eyes wide with shock. "Two… two million?"
"We have the proof now," Daniel said, tapping the folder on the table. "And we are going to take back every single penny he stole from you. I promise."
