Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

Daniel didn't move. He looked at the gun, then at Miller.
"You think Thomas is going to pay you after this?" Daniel asked, his voice entirely calm. "You’re a former cop, Miller. You know how guys like Thomas operate. The moment you pull that trigger, you become a liability. He’ll feed you to the DA to save his own skin."
"I don't think so," Miller said, raising the weapon. "Hand over the drive."
"I don't have to," Daniel said.
From the staircase behind Miller, a sharp voice echoed. "Drop the weapon! FBI! Hands in the air!"
Two federal agents, weapons drawn, rushed into the cabin. Elena Vance had not wasted any time; she had contacted her contacts in the federal prosecutor’s office the moment Daniel had texted her that he had found the drive. They had tracked Daniel’s phone to the yard, arriving just in time.
Miller looked at the federal agents, his face turning pale. He slowly lowered his weapon, dropping it to the dusty floor.

His personal and corporate bank accounts were frozen under a federal asset forfeiture order, and his empire began to dismantle in real time.
