Chapter 4 - The Motel Room Reckoning

While I was taking control of the executive floor at Harlow Tower, Daniel and Vanessa were experiencing a drastically different reality.

Driven out of the estate with only two suit jackets and a small roller suitcase, Daniel had been forced to check into a cheap, run-down motel near the interstate. His personal credit cards—all tied to Harlow Industries corporate accounts—had been frozen by Arthur Vance at noon.

Inside the cramped motel room, rain began to patter against the dirt-streaked window.

Daniel sat on the edge of the saggy mattress, staring blankly at his phone. Every ten seconds, he attempted to dial another contact—former business associates, country club friends, corporate recruiters.

Every single call went straight to voicemail.

"Answer the phone, damn it!" Daniel screamed, throwing his phone against the wall. It bounced off the thin drywall and landed on the thin carpet.

Vanessa was sitting on the plastic chair near the corner, holding an ice pack against her red, swollen eyes. Her cheap cardigan was a stark contrast to the designer coats she had worn hours earlier.

"What are we going to do, Daniel?" Vanessa whimpered, her voice raspy. "My apartment lease is paid through a company stipend! They sent me an eviction notice an hour ago! The bank locked my savings account because of that necklace investigation!"

"Shut up, Vanessa!" Daniel roared, turning on her like a rabid dog. "This is all your fault! If you hadn't insisted on taking her mother's necklace out of the safe, Claire wouldn't have brought the lawyers down on us!"

"My fault?!" Vanessa shrieked, standing up. "You told me she was nobody! You told me her family was a bunch of middle-class nobodies from Ohio! You lied to me, Daniel! You told me we were going to take over the company!"

"I didn't know!" Daniel shouted back, pacing the narrow room like a trapped animal. "How was I supposed to know her father was Victor Harlow?! She lived in a modest apartment when I met her! She drove a ten-year-old Honda! She never spent money!"

Suddenly, a heavy, thunderous knock echoed at the motel door.

Daniel froze. Hope flared in his eyes. "It's Drake... Harrison Drake must have convinced the board to offer me a settlement."

He rushed to the door, unlocking the deadbolt and throwing it open. "Harrison, thank god—"

Two men in dark suits stepped into the doorway. Behind them stood two uniformed officers from the Chicago Police Department, led by Detective Miller of the Financial Crimes Unit.

"Daniel Glass?" Detective Miller asked, holding up a badge and an arrest warrant.

Daniel’s blood turned to ice. "W-what is this?"

"You are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and destruction of property," Detective Miller announced, stepping inside. "Vanessa Hale, you are also named in this warrant as a co-conspirator."

Vanessa screamed as a female officer grabbed her arms and snapped heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists.

"Wait! No! You don't understand!" Daniel panicked, backing away into the room until his knees hit the bed. "This is a civil matter! My wife is just angry about a domestic dispute!"

"Your wife didn't file these charges, Mr. Glass," Detective Miller said, pulling Daniel's arms behind his back with practiced efficiency. "The United States District Attorney filed them ten minutes ago based on fifty boxes of forensic evidence submitted by Harlow Industries."

"No! NO! CLAIRE!" Daniel screamed as he was hauled out of the room into the rain, his fine leather shoes sloshing through muddy puddles as motel guests watched from their doors. "CLAIRE, PLEASE! TALK TO ME!"

The police cars sped away into the grey afternoon, their sirens wailing into the cold city air.
