Chapter 7 - The Empire Reclaimed

By spring, the landscape of Harlow Industries had been completely transformed under my leadership.

The Eastern Division, which Daniel had nearly crippled through his fraudulent scheme, was now the most profitable sector of the company. I restructured the executive board, fired the corrupt upper management team that Daniel had hired, and brought in fresh, talented young executives who valued ethics over greed.

The impending corporate merger—which Daniel had tried to take credit for—was finalized in April.

I personally led the negotiations in New York, securing a deal that increased our company's market valuation by three billion dollars. The Wall Street Journal featured me on its cover with the headline: THE RECLAMATION: How Claire Harlow Saved an Empire.

Meanwhile, Daniel’s life continued to unravel into absolute ruin.

Unable to pay his mounting legal debts, his uncle revoked his bail. Daniel was sent back to Cook County Jail to await his criminal trial. Abandoned by Vanessa—who had entered a guilty plea and was serving a three-year sentence in state prison—Daniel had no money, no career, no friends, and no family left.

On a warm afternoon in May, I sat in my corner executive office on the 50th floor of Harlow Tower, looking out at the glittering blue waters of Lake Michigan.

A soft knock sounded at the door.

Arthur Vance walked in, holding a blue-bound legal document.

"Claire," Arthur said, placing the document on my mahogany desk. "The final divorce decree has been signed by the state judge. Your marriage to Daniel Glass is legally dissolved."

I looked down at the document. My legal name had been officially changed back to Claire Harlow.

"And his parental rights?" I asked softly.

"In light of his upcoming felony conviction, Daniel voluntarily surrendered his parental rights in exchange for us dropping the civil lawsuit for financial restitution," Arthur explained. "He will never be able to claim a single dollar from you or Lily, and he is legally prohibited from ever approaching her."

I picked up my pen and signed the final page of the divorce decree.

A feeling of immense, weightless freedom washed over me. The final link to a dark, deceptive past had been severed forever.

"Thank you, Arthur," I said, handing him the document. "For everything."

"You did this yourself, Claire," Arthur smiled warmth in his eyes. "Your father and I just provided the transportation."
