Chapter 5 - The War for Custody

Three weeks later.

The winter snow had turned into a thick, clean blanket across the grounds of the Harlow Family Estate. The broken crib had been removed weeks ago, replaced by a custom-built nursery inside the main mansion, filled with hand-carved mahogany furniture, warm yellow lighting, and soft silk blankets.

Lily was thriving. She had gained two pounds, her small cheeks turning rosy and full. Every evening after returning from the office, I spent hours rocking her by the massive fireplace in the nursery, feeling a deep, profound peace that I had never known during my marriage to Daniel.

However, the legal war was far from over.

On a cold Tuesday morning, Arthur Vance sat in my sunlit home office, spreading court documents across my desk.

"Daniel was released on a five-hundred-thousand-dollar bail posted by his wealthy uncle," Arthur explained, pointing to a legal filing. "His criminal trial for fraud won't start for another six months. In the meantime, his defense team has filed a retaliatory custody motion in family court."

I paused, holding a silver pen in my hand. "A custody motion? On what grounds?"

Arthur sighed, his expression darkening. "They are claiming that as the CEO of a major corporation who works twelve hours a day, you are an 'unfit and absent mother.' They are petitioning for sole physical custody of Lily, along with five hundred thousand dollars a month in temporary child support payments."

I let out a bitter, cold laugh. "He wants to use my daughter as a human bargaining chip to pay his legal fees and fund his bail."

"Precisely," Arthur nodded. "His strategy is obvious. He thinks that by threatening to take Lily away, he can force you to drop the criminal embezzlement charges and agree to a quiet, lucrative divorce settlement."

"He really doesn't know who I am yet, does he?" I said softly, my eyes narrowing.

"Our emergency custody hearing is scheduled for tomorrow morning before Judge Evelyn Vance," Arthur warned. "Judge Vance is notoriously strict about parental stability. Daniel’s lawyer has hired a high-priced public relations firm to portray Daniel as a devoted, heartbroken father who was 'pushed out' by a ruthless billionaire family."

"Let him play his games in the media, Arthur," I said, opening my laptop. "Because tomorrow in court, I’m going to release the audio files from the porch."

"The porch files?" Arthur asked, raising an eyebrow.

"The night Daniel threw us out," I explained, pulling up an encrypted audio recording. "I wasn't just holding Lily. I had my phone recording in my coat pocket from the moment I confronted him in the hallway."

I pressed Play.

Daniel’s cold, unfeeling voice echoed through the office speakers:

“Take Lily and go, Claire. It was taking up space... just like everything else you brought into this house... You can find a shelter for all I care.”

Arthur closed his portfolio and smiled slowly.

"Claire," Arthur said, standing up. "That recording isn't just evidence. It's a execution sentence for his custody case."
