Chapter 4 - The Mask of Sorrow

The morning of the funeral arrived with a heavy, grey fog that rolled off the Atlantic, cloaking the Hartwell estate in a ghostly shroud.

Vanessa emerged from her bedroom wearing a custom-tailored black lace veil that cost more than most people earned in a year. She looked like the quintessential tragic widow, her eyes downcast, a delicate lace handkerchief clutched in her manicured hand.

"Daniel," she murmured, leaning against me as we walked out to the waiting black limousine. "The press is outside the gates. I told them you were too devastated to speak, so Lucas will handle the media statements."

"Thank you, Vanessa," I said, my face a mask of perfect composure. "You’ve thought of everything."

Lucas was already inside the limousine, staring intensely at his iPad. He looked up when we entered, a thin, nervous smile on his lips. "Everything is set for the afternoon board meeting, Daniel. The shares have officially transferred. The board has been notified that Vanessa will be taking the chair position starting at 2:00 PM."

"Splendid," I murmured, staring out the window at the passing grey trees. "Mother always wanted the company to stay in capable hands."

Vanessa squeezed my hand, her fingers warm and regular. It amazed me how a woman who had stood over a dying elderly lady just nights before could possess such a steady, calm pulse. She felt no guilt. She felt no remorse. She only felt the intoxicating rush of imminent wealth.

The church was packed with the city’s elite—politicians, rival shipping magnates, old family friends. They all watched with somber expressions as the casket was wheeled down the aisle.

I took my place in the front pew, Vanessa on my left, Lucas on my right. As the priest began the eulogy, speaking of Eleanor Hartwell's fierce spirit and dedication to the city, my phone vibrated twice in my jacket pocket.

It was a secure text from Marcus: Autopsy complete. Lethal levels of digitalis and sodium found in the tissue samples. The pre-dated medical certificate has been flagged as forgery. Federal warrants signed. We are in position.

I closed my eyes, letting a single, genuine tear roll down my cheek. It wasn't a tear of grief—it was a tear of release. The trap was set.

Vanessa noticed the tear and patted my knee affectionately. "Let it out, darling. I'm right here."

"I know you are, Vanessa," I whispered back, looking at her through the dark mesh of her funeral veil. "I know exactly where you are."
