Chapter 5 - The Short-Squeeze

While the priest was reading the final prayers over my mother’s casket at the suburban cemetery, five thousand miles away, the London Stock Exchange opened its afternoon session.

Sir Alistair did not hesitate. Utilizing the massive financial leverage of the English maritime group, he injected a two-hundred-million-dollar short position against Aegis Holdings—the private fund Vanessa and Lucas had used to secure their loans for the takeover.

Inside the limousine on the way to the post-funeral reception at our estate, Lucas’s iPad began to beep frantically. The quiet, solemn atmosphere inside the luxury vehicle was instantly punctured by the rapid, frantic tapping of his fingers.

"What is it, Lucas?" Vanessa asked, her voice tight with irritation. She didn't want him ruining her moment of triumph.

"I... I don't know," Lucas stammered, his face turning a sickly white in the dim light of the car. "There’s a massive sell-off happening on Aegis. Someone is dumping millions of shares. The market value is dropping like a stone."

"That’s impossible!" Vanessa snapped, forgetting her grieving widow persona for a second. "Who would short Aegis? Nobody even knows we own it!"

"The English group," Lucas whispered, his hands trembling as he stared at the red lines cascading down his screen. "Hartwell’s partners in London... they aren't finalized on our contract. They’re attacking us."

Vanessa turned her sharp, furious eyes toward me. I was sitting opposite them, my arms crossed, watching them with a calm, unblinking expression that made her freeze.

"Daniel," she said slowly, her voice dropping the sweet, soft tone entirely. "Did you call London? Did you tell them something?"

"I told them the truth, Vanessa," I said, leaning forward. The submissive, broken husband was gone. In his place sat the Chairman of Hartwell Maritime.

"What truth?" she demanded, her fingers ripping the black lace veil away from her face, revealing the vicious predator underneath.

"I told them that you and your brother are incompetent thieves," I said softly. "And that you shouldn't be trusted with a paper bag, let alone a multi-billion-dollar maritime empire."

"You stupid idiot!" Lucas yelled, lunging toward me inside the tight space of the limousine. "You signed the transfer! We own your shares! We can fire you by two o'clock today!"

"Look at the signature on that contract again, Lucas," I smiled, a cold, predatory movement of my lips. "Go on. Pull up the digital scan."

Lucas frantically tapped his screen, zooming in on the signature page of the document I had signed the night before. His breath caught in his throat.

"This... this says Thomas Hartwell," Lucas whispered, his voice cracking. "Who the hell is Thomas?"

"My father," I replied. "The man who died ten years ago. Legally speaking, Lucas, you just accepted a contract signed by a dead man. The transfer is completely null and void. My shares never left my account. And right now, my London partners are using those very shares to buy up your debt from the banks."

Vanessa stared at me, the reality of her total ruin crashing down on her like a tidal wave. "Daniel... please. We can talk about this."

"The talking is done, Vanessa," I said as the limousine pulled up to the grand iron gates of the Hartwell estate. "We've arrived."
