Chapter 6 - The Gates of Justice

The limousine didn't pull into the driveway. It stopped at the iron gates because the path was completely blocked by four black federal utility vehicles.

Before the driver could even open the door, the passenger doors of the limousine were yanked open from the outside. Marcus Vance stood there, wearing a heavy trench coat, surrounded by six armed federal agents.

"Vanessa Vance-Hartwell. Lucas Vance," Marcus announced, his voice like grinding stones. "You are under arrest for federal corporate fraud, grand larceny, and the first-degree murder of Eleanor Hartwell."

"Murder?" Vanessa shrieked, backing into the far corner of the leather seat, her perfectly manicured nails digging into the upholstery. "This is a lie! She had a stroke! We have the medical certificates!"

"The doctor you bribed confessed twenty minutes ago, Vanessa," Marcus said, reaching in and pulling Lucas out of the car by his collar, slamming him against the hood and clicking handcuffs onto his wrists. "He was very cooperative once we showed him the federal bank wires connecting his offshore account to your brother's fund."

Two female agents reached into the car and grabbed Vanessa. She fought them, screaming, her expensive black funeral dress ripping along the seam as they dragged her out onto the gravel road.

"Daniel! Daniel, help me!" she screamed, looking back at me with wide, terrified eyes. "I did it for us! I did it so we could be powerful! You love me!"

I stepped out of the limousine, standing tall in the cool autumn air. I walked over to her, looking down at the woman who had shared my bed while plotting the death of my mother.

"I loved a woman who didn't exist, Vanessa," I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion. "The woman standing in front of me is just a parasite who made the mistake of thinking my family was weak."

"You won't survive this either!" she spat, her face twisted in an ugly, desperate mask of rage as the agents pushed her head down into the back of a police cruiser. "The scandal will ruin the company! The stock will crash!"

"The stock is doing fine, Vanessa," I said, showing her my phone screen. "In fact, since your arrest warrant was leaked to the press five minutes ago, Hartwell Maritime shares have gone up twelve percent. The market loves it when the garbage gets thrown out."

The door of the police car slammed shut, cutting off her final scream.

Marcus walked over to me, placing a heavy, supportive hand on my shoulder. "We got them, Daniel. Your mother can rest now."

"Not yet, Marcus," I said, looking up at the grand stone mansion that had been my family's home for generations. "We still have to clean the house."
