Chapter 5 - The Snake’s Venom

Cynthia screamed, grabbing her designer purse and running out of the boardroom, leaving Jeffrey alone to face the storm.

Jeffrey stared at the custody papers on the table. His hands shook so violently he could barely hold the pen Marcus offered him.

“You’re a monster, Madeline,” Jeffrey whispered, his voice trembling with pure hatred. “He’s my son too. You can’t just erase me.”

“You erased yourself the moment you let your mother cage him,” Madeline replied, her voice steady. “Sign the papers, Jeffrey. Or face the FBI.”

With no other choice, Jeffrey signed. His signature was a jagged, broken line on the crisp white paper. He threw the pen at the table and stood up, glaring at her.

“You think you’ve won?” he spat. “My mother still has the Buckhead house locked down. She’ll never let you near it. And Cynthia... Cynthia has friends. You haven’t seen the end of this.”

“I welcome the challenge,” Madeline said. “Now, get out of my building.”

As Jeffrey slunk out of the boardroom, Madeline let out a long, shaky breath. She turned to Marcus. “Is the police report filed?”

“Yes,” Marcus nodded. “Dr. Sterling’s forensic report has been submitted to the Special Victims Unit. Detective Ramirez is handling the case. They are preparing warrants as we speak. But Madeline... Noelle is a manipulative woman. She’s already calling the media, claiming you’re an unfit mother who abandoned her child for two years to pursue her career in London.”

“Let her try,” Madeline said, her eyes flashing. “I have a few cards left to play.”

Meanwhile, at the Buckhead mansion, Noelle was in a state of fury. Jeffrey had called her, hysterical, explaining that they had been wiped out.

“That ungrateful witch!” Noelle screamed, pacing the grand living room. She looked at Austin, who was crying in the corner, startled by her screaming. “She thinks she can throw us out? This is my son’s house! This is my grandson’s house!”

The doorbell rang.

Noelle marched to the door, expecting Jeffrey. Instead, she opened it to find two police officers, accompanied by a woman in a sharp grey suit from the Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS).

“Noelle Vance?” Detective Ramirez asked, presenting a badge.

“Yes? What is the meaning of this intrusion?” Noelle demanded, her voice dripping with aristocratic disdain.

“We have a warrant for your arrest on charges of felony child abuse, child endangerment, and unlawful confinement,” Detective Ramirez said coldly.

Noelle gasped, stepping back. “Are you insane? I am a respectable member of the Atlanta country club! I haven’t done anything!”

“We have forensic medical evidence of the severe abuse of four-year-old Liam Vance, as well as audio recordings of you admitting to denying him food and confining him to the floor,” the detective said, stepping into the house. Behind him, the DFCS worker walked toward the kitchen, where a small closet under the stairs was locked from the outside with a heavy brass slide bolt.

“Open that closet,” the DFCS worker commanded.

The officer broke the lock, revealing a dark, damp space inside. On the floor of the closet was a dirty dog bed, a single empty plastic bowl, and scratches on the inside of the door—scratches made by tiny, desperate fingernails.

“My God,” the officer muttered, his face turning pale with disgust.

Noelle tried to run toward the back door, but the second officer quickly grabbed her arms, pulling them behind her back and clicking the handcuffs into place.

“You can’t do this to me!” Noelle shrieked, her perfect pearls rattling against her neck as she was dragged down the marble steps of her mansion. “Jeffrey! Cynthia! Help me!”

But there was no one to help her. The neighbors, drawn by the flashing blue lights, stood on their manicured lawns, recording the grand matriarch of Buckhead being loaded into the back of a police cruiser like a common criminal.
