Chapter 7 - The Mastermind’s Trap

Madeline knew that desperate animals were the most dangerous. She had never let her guard down. The North Georgia cottage was equipped with state-of-the-art security, and two private security guards patrolled the perimeter twenty-four hours a day.

But she also knew that true safety for Liam would only come when Jeffrey and Cynthia were permanently neutralized.

One evening, Marcus called her with urgent news.

“Madeline, our private investigator spotted Jeffrey’s car near your local grocery store. They’ve hired a low-level private detective to track your location. They know where the cottage is.”

Madeline felt a chill run down her spine, but her voice remained steady. “Are they planning to kidnap him?”

“It looks like it. Jeffrey has contacted a bail bondsman to get his mother out on a technicality, and they’re planning to flee the country to a non-extradition territory. They need Liam as a bargaining chip to force you to release the embezzled funds.”

Madeline looked through the glass doors at Liam, who was happily painting with Sarah in the dining room. He was wearing a clean yellow t-shirt, and his cheeks had regained their healthy, rosy color. He looked like a real boy now.

I will die before I let them touch him again, she thought.

“Let them come, Marcus,” Madeline said, her voice dropping to a whisper. “In fact, let’s make it easy for them. We are going to set a trap.”

The next day, Madeline made a public show of taking Liam to a pediatric clinic in downtown Atlanta. She didn’t use her private security team; instead, she hired a standard transport service, making sure her movements were easily trackable.

In the shadows of the clinic’s parking garage, a dark SUV was waiting.

Inside the SUV, Jeffrey and Cynthia watched as Madeline walked into the building, holding Liam’s hand.

“This is our chance,” Cynthia whispered, her eyes gleaming with malice. “When they come out, we grab the kid. The driver is paid off. We’ll be at the private airfield before she can even call the police.”

“Are you sure about this, Cynthia?” Jeffrey asked, his voice shaking. “If we get caught, it’s kidnapping. That’s federal.”

“We’re already ruined, Jeffrey!” Cynthia snapped. “Do you want to spend your life in a cell, or do you want to live like royalty in South America? Move!”

As Madeline and Liam exited the clinic an hour later, the dark SUV accelerated, blocking their path.

Two men in ski masks jumped out of the vehicle. One of them lunged at Madeline, pushing her to the ground, while the other grabbed the screaming child from her arms.

“Liam!” Madeline shrieked, struggling on the pavement.

The SUV sped away, leaving Madeline crying out in the empty parking lot.

Cynthia, sitting in the back seat of the SUV, laughed triumphantly as she looked at the crying child beside her. “We did it, Jeffrey! We have the kid!”

But as she looked closer at the child, her laughter died in her throat.

The boy wasn’t crying anymore. In fact, he looked remarkably calm. He reached up and pulled off his hat, revealing a face that wasn’t Liam’s at all.

It was a highly realistic, medical-grade silicone doll, designed to mimic Liam’s height and weight, equipped with a speaker that played pre-recorded crying sounds.

“What the...” Cynthia gasped.

Suddenly, the driver of the SUV pulled over, locking the doors. He turned around, pulling off his cap to reveal Detective Ramirez.

From the back of the SUV, the trunk partition slid open, and two heavily armed police officers stepped out, pointing their weapons at Jeffrey and Cynthia.

May you like

“Step out of the vehicle with your hands up,” Ramirez commanded. “You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit kidnapping, attempted kidnapping, and violation of a protective order.”

Cynthia screamed, throwing the doll at the window, but it was too late. The trap had closed.
