Chapter 9 - The Sweetest Sound

Six months after the trial, the North Georgia cottage had truly become a home.
The Buckhead mansion had been sold, and every single penny from the sale had been placed into a secure, iron-clad trust fund for Liam’s future education and medical care. The remaining assets of Vance Logistics had been restructured, with Madeline taking sole control as the President and Chairwoman, running the company remotely so she could spend every day with her son.
Liam was thriving.
He had grown taller, his limbs strong and healthy from running through the hills. His hair was thick and shiny, and his eyes were filled with the bright, curious spark that belonged to a happy four-year-old.
He still had moments of anxiety, but they were fewer and farther between. Whenever a storm rolled in, he would run to Madeline’s side, and she would hold him, whispering his favorite lullaby until the fear passed.
One sunny afternoon, Madeline was sitting in the garden, watching Liam play with a golden retriever puppy she had adopted for him. The puppy, named Barnaby, was a ball of energy, chasing Liam through the wildflowers.
Liam tripped over a root and fell into the soft grass.
Madeline gasped, starting to stand up. “Liam, are you okay?”
Liam didn’t cry. He sat up, shaking the dirt from his hands, and looked at the puppy, who was licking his face enthusiastically.
Suddenly, a sound echoed through the garden.
It was a giggle.
Then, a bright, bubbly, beautiful laugh.
Liam was laughing. He threw his arms around the puppy’s neck, his face lit up with pure, unadulterated joy.
Madeline stood frozen, her hand over her mouth as tears of happiness finally streamed down her face. She had waited two years, survived a betrayal of the worst kind, and fought a war to hear that sound.
Liam looked up and saw his mother standing there, tears in her eyes.
He stood up on his strong, healthy legs and ran toward her. He didn’t crawl. He didn’t hide.
“Mommy!” he cried out, his voice clear, strong, and sweet. “Look! Barnaby is tickling me!”

Madeline dropped to her knees, opening her arms wide. Liam threw himself into her embrace, his small arms wrapping tightly around her neck.
“I see, my love,” Madeline whispered, burying her face in his soft hair, breathing in the scent of sunshine and grass. “I see.”
