Chapter 5 - The Web Tightens

The sit-down at the Grand Hotel was set for midnight. Rain lashed against the high-rise windows as Chicago’s top five syndicate heads gathered in the private penthouse conference room. Lorenzo Rossi sat at the head of the table, flanked by heavy hitters from the New York and Detroit families.

Dante entered the room alone, wearing a dark suit, his eyes sharp and bloodshot. He knew this was a trap, but he had no choice. If he didn’t face the Commission, he would be declared persona non grata by morning, making him open season for every hitman in the Midwest.

“Where is this informant, Lorenzo?” Dante demanded, standing at the foot of the long mahogany table. “We’ve been sitting here for ten minutes.”

The heavy double doors at the end of the room clicked open.

The room fell dead silent.

Amara walked in. She wore an elegant emerald-green silk dress that highlighted her seven-month baby bump, paired with a sharp black trench coat draped over her shoulders. Her dark hair was styled in flawless waves, and her posture exuded a serene, terrifying authority. Behind her stood Julian Vance, holding a secure encrypted briefcase.

Dante’s breath caught in his throat. His eyes widened in absolute shock and disbelief.

“Amara?” he whispered, his voice cracking for the first time in his life.

“Good evening, gentlemen,” Amara said smoothly, taking a seat at the foot of the table opposite Lorenzo, completely ignoring Dante’s presence.

“What is the meaning of this?!” Dante roared, stepping forward, but two giant enforcers from the Detroit family stepped in front of him, drawing their weapons.

“Sit down, Dante,” Lorenzo commanded coldly. “Let the lady speak.”

Amara opened the briefcase, laying out five bound dossiers. “What you have before you are the complete financial pathways of the Moretti family for the last decade. As you can see, Dante has been quietly skimming fifteen percent off all cross-border shipments to fund his private offshore accounts, leaving the rest of the Commission to shoulder the legal risks with the Department of Justice.”

The capos quickly flipped through the pages, their expressions turning from skepticism to lethal fury.

“You lied to us, Dante,” Lorenzo said, his voice dropping to a dangerous register. “You brought federal heat onto all of our families to cover your own greed.”

“She’s lying!” Dante shouted, pointing at Amara, his heart hammering against his ribs. “She’s my wife! She’s doing this out of revenge because I—”

“Because you brought a mistress into my home?” Amara interrupted, raising a single, delicate eyebrow. “No, Dante. I don't burn empires down over ego. I burn them down because you became a liability to my daughter’s future.”
