Chapter 9 - The Final Letter
Two years later, Amara received a package from a law firm in Chicago. It contained a small, wooden music box—hand-carved—and a legal document signed by Dante Moretti.
Dante had formally relinquished all parental claims, voluntarily signing away any rights so that Julian Vance could officially adopt Elena as her legal father, granting the child complete peace and security from any future legal disputes regarding the Moretti estate.
Inside the music box was a final note from Dante:
“Amara,
I watched a video of Elena’s second birthday online from a distance. She has your smile. She looks happy. She looks safe.
I used to think power was holding a gun or controlling a city. I know now that true power was having a woman who loved me unconditionally, who stood by me when I deserved it least, and whom I treated like an option.
I am signing these papers not because I don't love our daughter, but because I love her enough to keep my ruined world away from her. Julian is the man I should have been. Give her the life I was too blind to give you.
Goodbye, Amara. Dante.”
