Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Ambush

The sun rose over Wall Street like a dull silver blade slicing through the fog. At 6:45 AM, my convoy pulled into the underground garage of the Cole Dynamics Tower. Accompanied by Marcus, Arthur, and four plainclothes security officers, I took the private elevator directly to the 40th floor.

The executive floor was unnaturally quiet. When the elevator doors opened, two private security guards hired by Sloane Capital were standing outside my office suite.

"Mr. Cole, this floor is restricted by order of the Board of Directors," one guard stated, reaching for his belt.

Before he could draw his taser, my lead security officer stepped forward, displaying federal court injunction papers signed forty-five minutes earlier by an emergency judge. "Stand down. Mr. Cole remains the lawful chief executive officer of this corporation until a formal vote occurs."

The guards hesitated, stepping aside as Arthur unlocked the double doors to my private suite. Inside, the wall safe behind my desk had already been tampered with. The digital keypad was glowing red, showing three failed passcode attempts.

"He tried to open it this morning," Marcus observed, examining the electronic log. "He didn't have the biometric bypass."

At precisely 8:00 AM, I walked into the main boardroom. Eleven directors were seated around the massive glass table. At the head of the table sat Victor Sloane, impeccably tailored in a charcoal suit, sipping espresso as if he hadn't spent the past six months conspiring to ruin my life.

When I entered, three directors stood up in shock. Victor merely set his cup down, an amused smile touching his lips.

"Adrian," Victor said smoothly. "We were concerned for your well-being after your sudden departure last night. I was just informing the board that your personal stress levels have reached a point where temporary leave might be necessary for your recovery."

"Save the performance, Victor," I said, walking to the foot of the table and placing my briefcase on the glass. "The meeting last night wasn't a corporate negotiation. It was an ambush. But you underestimated two things."

Victor raised an eyebrow. "Is that so? And what would those be?"

"My son's courage, and your own sloppiness."

I clicked a button on the remote control in my hand. The motorized blinds closed, and the massive projection screen behind Victor flared to life.

The room went completely silent as the audio recording from the basement began to play through the boardroom speakers. Victor’s voice filled the room, detailing the plan to drug my children's reputations, frame me for domestic violence, seize my shares, and strip the company’s IP.

Two directors gasped. Victoria Sterling, sitting to Victor's right, immediately stood up and moved away from him.

"This is an illegal wiretap!" Victor snapped, his composure finally cracking as he slammed his fist on the table. "This is doctored audio! Fabricated by a man unraveling under the pressure of a forty-million-dollar deal!"

"Then perhaps you'd like to explain these," Arthur said, stepping forward to hand copies of the offshore bank transfers and the signed agreement between Victor and Lena to each director. "These documents carry Victor Sloane’s personal digital signature, verified by federal forensic auditors two hours ago."

Victor stared at the paper in front of him. His cheeks flushed crimson, the veins in his neck bulging. He looked around the table, searching for support among the men he had bribed and manipulated for years. None of them met his gaze.

"You're done, Victor," I said quietly. "The police are waiting in the lobby."
