Chapter 7 - Truth and Redemption

The question hung in the quiet hallway of the courthouse like a heavy weight. Arthur and Marcus stepped back, giving us space.

I looked at Noah—at his sharp brown eyes, the slight cowlick in his hair, the way he held his shoulders when he was nervous. Everything about him was woven into the fabric of my life.

"Noah," I said, holding his hands in mine. "Biology makes a person related to someone. But love, time, sacrifices, and being there when you're scared—that is what makes someone a father. Victor Sloane may share blood with you, but he was never your dad. I held you the night you were born. I stayed up with you when you had fevers. I made mistakes—terrible mistakes—by spending too much time at work. But you are my son. Nothing in this world will ever change that."

Tears trickled down Noah’s cheeks, but for the first time in months, he smiled—a genuine, light smile that lifted the dark shadow from his face. He wrapped his arms tightly around my neck.

"I love you, Dad," he whispered.

"I love you too, Noah. More than my life."

We returned to the Manhattan townhouse that evening. I formally resigned from my executive position as CEO of Cole Dynamics, appointing Victoria Sterling as interim chief executive. The announcement sent shockwaves through the financial world, but I didn't care. The forty-million-dollar deal, the patents, the prestige—it all felt like meaningless noise compared to the sound of Lily and Noah laughing in the living room as we ordered pizza and set up board games on the carpet.

However, Victor Sloane was not a man to go down quietly.

At 10:00 PM, Arthur called my secure line. "Adrian, we have a problem. Victor’s legal team just posted a ten-million-dollar cash bond. He’s out on bail."

"How?" I asked, standing up from the dining table where I was helping Lily with a puzzle. "With federal wire fraud and conspiracy charges?"

"A sympathetic magistrate signed the release before our federal hold could be processed," Arthur explained, his tone urgent. "And there’s more. Sloane Capital’s board just filed an emergency motion to seize Cole Dynamics' source code assets, claiming you stolen proprietary software when you resigned. Victor is heading to the backup data center in New Jersey right now with a team of private enforcement agents to physically confiscate the servers."

"If he gets those servers," I said, "he can wipe the logs that prove his financial fraud and frame me for corporate sabotage."

"Exactly," Arthur said. "He’s desperate, Adrian. He knows his empire is collapsing, and he’s trying to burn everything down on his way out."
