Chapter 6 - The Custody Battle

The emergency custody hearing at the Manhattan Family Court was a battlefield.

Lena's high-priced defense attorney, hired using the last of her un-frozen personal accounts, argued that I was an unstable workaholic who had abandoned my parental duties, leaving the children in an environment of extreme neglect. They presented manipulated phone logs showing hundreds of missed calls from home over the past three years.

"Your Honor," Lena's lawyer declared, standing before Judge Katherine Mercer. "Mr. Cole’s sudden disappearance from a major corporate transaction last night demonstrates his volatile, unpredictable nature. Mrs. Cole was merely preparing educational discipline tools in the home, which my client’s husband has wildly exaggerated to seize total control of the marital estate."

Judge Mercer, a stern woman with thirty years on the bench, turned her gaze to Arthur and Marcus. "Does the father have a response?"

Arthur stood up and adjusted his lapel. "We do, Your Honor. We submit into evidence the complete, unedited video files recovered from the secure server in the Cole residence, alongside the forensic medical evaluations of Noah and Lily Cole conducted this morning."

Arthur submitted a tablet to the bailiff, who handed it to the judge.

For ten agonizing minutes, the courtroom was completely silent except for the faint, chilling audio emanating from the judge's bench—Lena’s voice shouting instructions at eight-year-old Lily to cry louder for the camera, followed by Noah’s small, brave voice refusing to read the false statement about me hitting them.

Judge Mercer's face hardened as she watched the video. She closed the tablet and looked directly at Lena, who flinched under the judge's glare.

"Mrs. Cole," Judge Mercer said, her voice dripping with icy contempt. "In my three decades on this bench, I have rarely witnessed such a calculated, emotionally abusive manipulation of innocent children for financial gain. The court hereby issues an immediate, absolute protective order."

The judge struck her gavel. "Full temporary legal and physical custody of Noah and Lily Cole is granted exclusively to Adrian Cole. Mrs. Cole is to have zero contact with the minors, directly or through third parties, pending criminal prosecution. She is ordered to vacate the marital residence immediately."

As the bailiffs led Lena away, she looked back at me, her eyes hollow, finally realizing that her grand scheme had destroyed everything she claimed to be fighting for.

I walked out of the courtroom into the hallway, where Noah was sitting on a bench holding a small plush animal that Lily had asked him to keep safe.

When he saw me, he stood up slowly. "Dad? Do we have to go back to the big house?"

I knelt in front of him, pulling him into a hug. "No, buddy. We're never going back to that house. We're going to build a new home. Just the three of us."

Noah pulled back slightly, looking into my eyes with an intensity that broke my heart. "Dad... when I was in the basement, I found a letter in Mom's locked box. It had my birth date on it and a name: Sloane Capital."

He paused, his voice trembling. "Is... is that man my real father?"
