Chapter 3 - The Dead Man's Hand

Ryan swallowed hard, his eyes darting frantically toward the two-way mirror in the wall. The smooth, charming demeanor he had cultivated for fifteen years was peeling away like wet wallpaper, revealing the terrified coward underneath.
"He... he told me you’d never find out," Ryan whispered, his voice cracking. "He said as long as I kept you happy, as long as I kept you distracted with your military career, you’d never look into his old maritime accounts."
"Why did you attack my mother tonight, Ryan?" I demanded, my voice dropping an octave into pure menace. "What was in this house that was worth risking everything?"
Ryan shook his head frantically. "He was going to kill me, Kelsey! Your father! He gave me forty-eight hours to retrieve the master hard drive from your mother’s safe! He said she had changed the cryptographic signatures on the Meridian escrow account. Without those signatures, the four million dollars in Port Authority kickbacks was locked forever!"
"So you came to her house under the guise of an apology," I said. "You brought an apple pie to get through the door. And when she refused to give you the codes, you took a baseball bat from your trunk and tried to beat an old woman to death."
"I didn't mean to hit her that hard!" Ryan wept, tears finally streaming down his cheeks—not out of remorse, but out of absolute panic for his own skin. "She threatened to call you! She said, 'Kelsey knows what you are!' She said you were already investigating the Port Authority manifests! I panicked, Kelsey! I just wanted her to stop talking!"
I stood up straight, smoothing the front of my tunic. The disgust inside me was a cold, physical weight, but I refused to give him the satisfaction of seeing me lose control.
"You're going to give me the location of Richard Kelsey's operational base," I said.
"If I tell you, he’ll have me killed in prison!" Ryan shrieked, pulling against his handcuff until the metal scraped violently against the table. "He has people everywhere, Kelsey! On the docks, in the state police, in the defense logistics agency! He’s spent twelve years building this network!"
"You have two choices, Ryan," I said, pulling a pen from my pocket and placing it on the table alongside a official military witness statement form. "Option one: You sign this confession, detail every asset Richard Kelsey owns, and accept a plea bargain that puts you in federal protective custody for twenty-five years. Option two: I walk out of this room, drop the military hold, and let the local district attorney charge you with attempted murder, elder abuse, and armed robbery. In state prison, without federal protection, you won't survive twenty-four hours."
Ryan stared at the white paper. His hand shook so violently he could barely hold the pen.
"Where is he?" I asked gently.
"The old lighthouse..." Ryan sobbed, his head dropping onto the cold stainless steel. "The abandoned keeper's cottage at Thomas Point... He’s been living in the subterranean bunker beneath the light station... He's leaving the country on a panamanian freighter at dawn."
I grabbed the pen and the signed paper, turning toward the door.
"Kelsey!" Ryan called out, his voice hollow and desperate as the lock clicked. "Do you... do you ever think you really loved me?"

I stopped at the doorway, looking back over my shoulder.
"I loved the man I thought you were," I said softly. "Too bad that man never existed."
