Chapter 7 - The Confrontation at Saint Jude's

The tires of my SUV shrieked against the concrete floor of the hospital parking garage as I slid into a space near the main emergency entrance. I sprinted through the automatic glass doors, my military boots clicking sharply against the sterile floor.

In the center of the surgical lobby, standing near the security counter, was Victor Vance.

Victor was six years older than Ryan—taller, broader, wearing a tailored charcoal suit and a gold watch that gleamed under the overhead lights. He held a leather briefcase in one hand and a stack of legal documents in the other, shouting aggressively at the young floor administrative assistant.

"I don't care about your visiting hours!" Victor raised his voice, slamming his hand onto the counter. "I am Nancy Kelsey’s court-appointed temporary legal guardian under an emergency decree filed in Anne Arundel County two hours ago! You will process her release into my private care facility immediately!"

"Mr. Vance, the patient is still recovering from severe trauma—" the assistant stammered, pulling back in fear.

"I said move!" Victor barked, stepping toward the double doors leading to the private recovery wing.

"Step away from those doors, Victor," I commanded, my voice cutting through the lobby like a steel blade.

Victor froze. He turned slowly, an arrogant, practiced smile spreading across his face as he took in my rain-soaked military uniform and tactical holster.

"Ah, Kelsey," Victor said smoothly, smoothing his tie as if he were attending a corporate board meeting. "I was hoping you’d arrive. I’m here to clean up the mess my idiot brother created tonight."

"You don't have a legal decree, Victor," I said, walking slowly toward him, keeping my hands free at my sides. "You have a forged power of attorney document created using stolen titles pulled from my home office two hours ago."

Victor laughed—a hollow, unpleasant sound that made my skin crawl.

"Always the investigator, aren't you?" Victor sneered, stepping closer so the security guards couldn't hear his low tone. "Let's speak frankly, Kelsey. Ryan is an incompetent fool who ruined a simple acquisition. But the land transfer on the Garrett County property is already registered in the state digital portal. As of 4:00 AM this morning, Vance Development Corporation owns the mineral rights to that farm."

"Fraud voids any legal contract, Victor," I noted coldly.

"Only if you can prove fraud in a state court before the pipeline construction contract is executed at noon today," Victor replied, a sinister gleam in his eyes. "And considering your mother is currently incapacitated with a head injury, her testimony is legally compromised. A defense attorney will have her declared mentally unfit before she ever steps onto a witness stand."

My blood ran like liquid ice, but my tactical training locked my emotional response into absolute submission.

"Look around you, Victor," I said, pointing to the ceiling corners of the lobby. "You are in a level-one trauma center under federal military jurisdiction due to my mother’s status as a military dependent. Every word you just spoke has been recorded by three high-definition security cameras equipped with directional audio monitoring."

Victor’s confident expression faltered slightly. He looked up at the black dome cameras positioned above the reception desk.

"Furthermore," I continued, pulling my military tablet from my jacket pocket—the tablet I had retrieved from my home safe after tracking its internal GPS beacon—"Ryan didn't just steal the land titles tonight. He recorded your phone call to him at 9:15 PM, where you explicitly instructed him to 'use whatever physical force necessary' to get Nancy's signature on the transfer deed."

Victor’s face turned gray. "Ryan... Ryan would never record me..."

"Ryan recorded everyone, Victor," I said, displaying the audio wave file on the screen. "He was a terrified coward who kept insurance policies on his own family. He gave me the decryption password an hour ago in exchange for a federal plea deal."

Before Victor could speak, the hospital doors opened once more.

Four armed US Marshals stepped into the lobby, led by Detective Christopher.

"Victor Vance," Christopher announced, pulling out a set of cuffs. "You are under arrest for federal extortion, conspiracy to commit murder, land fraud, and witness intimidation. Put the briefcase on the floor and put your hands on your head."

Victor looked at me, his eyes filled with pure, unadulterated venom. He dropped the leather briefcase onto the floor, where it popped open, spilling the forged land documents across the tile.

May you like

"You destroyed your own husband's family," Victor spat as the Marshals forced his hands behind his back.

"No, Victor," I said, watching them lead him away in chains. "You destroyed yourselves the moment you touched my mother."
