Chapter 2 - The Frostbite Audit

By noon, the blizzard outside had settled into a steady, bitter frost that glazed the hospital windows in thick patterns of ice.
My mother woke up around 1:00 p.m. Her eyes were wide with panic as she took in the sterile white walls and the dripping IV bag attached to her arm. The moment she saw me sitting beside her, she let out a shaky breath, her posture slumping in relief.
"Emily..." she rasped, her voice dry and cracked.
I quickly poured a glass of warm water, inserted a straw, and helped her take a few small sips.
"I'm right here, Mom," I said softly, brushing a stray lock of gray hair away from her bruised cheek. "You're safe. Nobody can touch you here."
She clutched my wrist with surprising strength, her knuckles turning white. "Martin called my phone before I turned it off. He said... he said if I didn't come home and sign the estate over, he would have me committed to a private asylum. He said he has a doctor who will sign the sanity papers for five thousand dollars..."
A dark fury surged through me, but my expression remained smooth and calm. "He's bluffing, Mom. He can't do anything to you anymore."
"You don't know him, Emily," she whimpered, fresh tears streaming down her face. "He's connected. He knows the local judges, the local police chief... they all go to the same country club. Caleb helps him hide everything. My own son, Emily... I paid off his debts, I bought him his first sports car, I shielded him when he failed out of college... and he held my arms while Martin dragged me into that freezing garage..."
She broke down, her chest heaving with deep, heartbroken sobs.
I pulled her into a tight, protective embrace, resting my chin on top of her head. "I know, Mom. I know it hurts. But listen to me very carefully."
I pulled back slightly so she could look directly into my eyes.
"You spent twenty years believing Martin was the powerful master of this family, and you spent ten years believing I was just a quiet girl who fixed spreadsheets in an office," I said, my voice dripping with absolute certainty. "They think I'm weak because I don't shout or throw my weight around. But starting today, I am taking control of everything."
She blinked through her tears, looking confused. "What... what can you do against them?"
I opened my briefcase, pulled out a thick stack of legal power-of-attorney documents, and laid them on her bed tray alongside a black pen.
"These papers transfer full legal control of your real estate trust, your bank accounts, your medical decisions, and your corporate shares over to me," I explained clearly. "The moment you sign these, Martin loses every legal right he ever had to touch your money or make decisions about your life. He won't be able to put you in a clinic, he won't be able to sell the house, and he won't be able to touch a single cent of your trust."
Eleanor looked at the documents, her hand shaking as she picked up the pen. "Will this protect you, too? I don't want them hurting you, Emily."
"Mom," I smiled softly, a genuine, cold smile that didn't reach my eyes. "They can't hurt me. They're playing with sticks, and I'm holding the launch codes."
Without another second of hesitation, Eleanor signed her name on every designated line.
Ten minutes later, my assistant at Apex Analytics, a brilliant young legal clerk named Chloe, walked into the hospital room accompanied by a licensed mobile notary public. Chloe had driven through two hours of icy roads from our main office to deliver the official corporate seals.
Within fifteen minutes, the power of attorney was fully notarized, stamped, and uploaded to the state digital court registry.
"What's our next move, Boss?" Chloe asked, stepping away from the bed and opening her tablet.
"Execute Phase One," I commanded calmly. "Freeze all joint bank accounts linked to Eleanor Vance and Martin Vance under emergency spousal protection laws. File an immediate legal injunction blocking any asset transfers out of Vance Logistics pending a judicial audit. And issue a formal demand letter to Martin’s primary bank requesting immediate verification of all corporate line items for the past three years."
Chloe’s eyes lit up with professional excitement. "Consider it done. What about Caleb?"
"Caleb has three luxury cars registered under his name, all funded through Vance Logistics corporate leases," I replied, pulling up a secondary file. "Notify the leasing agency that the corporate authorization was fraudulent and executed without majority shareholder consent. Have the repo trucks seize the vehicles by nightfall."
"Understood," Chloe nodded, typing rapidly on her screen. "He's going to be walking in the snow by dinner."
After Chloe and the notary left, I sat back down beside my mother. She was watching me with wide, astonished eyes, as if seeing her daughter for the very first time.
"Emily..." she whispered in awe. "Who are you really?"
"I'm the person Martin and Caleb should have been terrified of from the start," I replied softly.
My phone chimed on the table. It was an incoming encrypted email from Special Agent Marcus Vance.
Status Update: File reviewed. This is a slam-dunk tax evasion and money laundering case. A federal grand jury is being impaneled in the northern district. Subpoenas for Vance Logistics' physical servers will be issued within 48 hours. Keep your head down, Emily. We're moving in.
I closed my laptop and stood up.

"Where are you going?" my mother asked nervously.
"Martin invited me to bring you back home by five o'clock," I said, adjusting the lapels of my tailored wool coat. "It would be rude of me to miss the appointment."
