Chapter 9 - The New Beginning

Three months after the trial concluded, my mother and I stood on the back porch of a magnificent new home overlooking the tranquil waters of Lake Michigan.

Using the proceeds from the sale of the Oakridge estate and her restored corporate trust, we had purchased a beautiful four-bedroom cottage surrounded by pine trees and blooming flower gardens. It was a place far away from the dark memories of the past—a place built entirely on peace, freedom, and fresh beginnings.

Eleanor was kneeling in the rich black soil of her new garden, planting red roses under the warm afternoon sun. Her laughter rang out clear and bright as she talked with our new neighbor, a sweet elderly woman who had brought over a warm homemade peach pie.

I leaned against the porch railing, holding a cup of fresh coffee, watching my mother reclaim her happiness.

My assistant Chloe walked out onto the porch, carrying a slim leather folder.

"Boss," Chloe smiled, handing me the file. "The final liquidations from the Vance Logistics bankruptcy sale have cleared. The court has officially transferred the remaining $1.8 million directly into your mother’s private foundation account."

"Excellent work, Chloe," I said, reviewing the numbers. "And Apex Analytics?"

"Our firm’s reputation has skyrocketed since the trial," Chloe reported proudly. "We’ve signed four new major federal contracts this month alone. Everyone in the financial world wants the 'Paperwork Girl' on their side."

I let out a soft laugh, looking up at the clear blue sky.

The nickname that Martin had used to mock and belittle me had become my greatest badge of honor.

"Take the rest of the week off, Chloe," I said, closing the folder. "You've earned it."
