Chapter 7 - The Arrest

On Monday morning, the federal grand jury returned a thirty-six-count criminal indictment against Martin Arthur Vance.

The charges included Grand Larceny, Wire Fraud, Corporate Money Laundering, Felony Tax Evasion, and Conspiracy to Commit Financial Extortion. Simultaneously, the local county prosecutor—armed with the medical records, security camera footage, and forensic evidence provided by my firm—issued a state arrest warrant for Aggravated Physical Assault and Kidnapping.

The arrest took place at 10:00 a.m. at the Oakridge estate.

I sat in my SUV parked down the street, watching through the clear winter air as four marked police cruisers and two black federal SUVs pulled up the long driveway, their red and blue lights flashing against the snow.

Martin was dragged out of the front doors in handcuffs.

He was no longer wearing his sharp charcoal suits or expensive leather shoes. He wore a rumpled sweater and sweatpants, his hair unkempt, his face hollow and wild with defeat.

As the officers guided him toward the back of a police cruiser, he caught sight of my SUV parked near the iron gates.

Martin stopped, staring directly at me through the glass. He opened his mouth, shouting curses and obscenities that were lost in the cold air, his face contorted in raw, helpless rage.

I rolled down my window just an inch, letting the freezing winter air rush into the warm car.

I didn't shout back. I didn't raise my voice.

I simply met his gaze with absolute, unyielding coldness, raising my coffee cup in a silent, final toast to his destruction.

The police officer shoved Martin into the back seat of the cruiser, slammed the door shut, and drove away, the siren echoing down the quiet suburban street.

It was over.

The man who had terrorized my mother, lied to the world, and built an empire on deception was going away for a very, very long time.
