Chapter 1 - The Transformation at Aster House

At 8:17 PM, the massive brass doors of the Aster House grand ballroom swung open.

The hum of high-society chatter, discreet corporate deal-making, and heavy silver clinking against porcelain died instantly.

Dominic Vale, standing by the champagne tower with a glass of crystal tumbler in hand, turned his head expecting to see a hesitant woman in a sensible navy dress clutching a oversized leather purse. Grant Mercer leaned against a nearby marble pillar, a cruel smirk already dancing across his lips as he raised his camera-ready smartphone.

Neither of them was prepared for the woman who stepped across the threshold.

Evelyn Hart wore a backless, floor-length gown of liquid emerald silk that draped over her curves like melted jade. The severe, matronly knot she wore every day was gone; her thick brown hair fell in glossy, loose waves down her bare back. She wore no glasses. Her eyes—a piercing, storm-gray color previously hidden behind thick lenses—were defined with sharp charcoal liner. She wore a single, exquisite emerald pendant at her collarbone that looked suspiciously like a museum piece.

She didn't shuffle. She didn't look down. She walked with the deliberate, spine-straight grace of royalty inspecting a newly conquered province.

Grant’s smirk evaporated. He almost choked on his wine.

Dominic’s fingers tightened so hard around his crystal glass that the liquor sloshed over the rim. His heart pounded against his ribs with a sudden, violent thud.

This wasn't his secretary. This was a predator dressed in silk.

Evelyn’s eyes swept the ballroom, ignoring the shocked stares of mob capos, corrupt politicians, and billionaire heiresses, until her gaze locked directly onto Dominic. A faint, razor-sharp smile touched her scarlet-painted lips.

She glided across the polished marble floor toward him, her heels making a sharp, rhythmic sound that seemed to command the entire room.

"Good evening, Mr. Vale," Evelyn said, her voice smooth, low, and velvet-soft, completely devoid of the deferential, nasal tone she used at the office.

Dominic stared at her, his throat completely dry. "Evelyn..."

"You look surprised," she said gently, tilting her head. "Did I fail to meet the dress code for 'executive visibility'?"

Grant stumbled over, his face pale with sudden embarrassment. "Evelyn? Is that... is that really you? Where are your glasses? What happened to the cardigan?"

Evelyn turned to Grant, her gray eyes narrowing into two icy points. "The cardigan was for my comfort, Grant. Tonight, I decided to focus on yours."

She stepped closer to Dominic, her emerald silk sleeve brushing against his black tuxedo. The subtle scent of night-blooming jasmine and expensive leather drifted off her skin, making Dominic’s blood run hot.

"Shall we take our seats?" Evelyn asked smoothly, sliding her hand naturally around Dominic’s forearm. "I believe the lions are hungry tonight."

Dominic felt her warm hand on his arm, and for the first time in his life, the cold, unshakeable boss of the Vale syndicate felt completely out of control.
