Chapter 4 - The War in the Shadows

The kiss was hot, urgent, and filled with four years of unspoken desire.

Evelyn’s hands slid into Dominic’s dark hair, pulling him closer, her body melting against his tailored suit. Dominic groaned, wrapping his arms around her waist, lifting her slightly off her feet as he pressed her back against the dark oak bookshelves.

When they finally broke apart, both of them were breathless, their foreheads resting together in the dim light.

"We can't do this at the office," Evelyn whispered, her cheeks flushed red.

"To hell with the office," Dominic rasped, kissing her jaw line. "I'm buying you out of that desk."

A heavy knock sounded at the library door.

"Dominic!" Grant’s agitated voice came through the thick wood. "Dominic, open up! We have a major problem at the West Side docks!"

Dominic closed his eyes, taking a deep breath to steady his racing pulse. He looked down at Evelyn, giving her a gentle, reassuring kiss on the tip of her nose.

"Wait here," Dominic said quietly.

He unlocked the door and stepped into the hallway, shutting it behind him. Grant was pacing back and forth, looking frantic.

"What is it, Grant?" Dominic snapped coldly.

"Pier 14 was raided by federal agents twenty minutes ago," Grant panicked. "They pulled three containers of untaxed electronics. And someone leaked the internal shipping schedules from Vale Tower!"

Dominic’s eyes turned to ice. "Who had access to those schedules?"

"Only three people," Grant said, his eyes darting toward the library door. "You, me... and your librarian."

Dominic grabbed Grant by his collar, slamming him against the hallway wall. "Watch your mouth, Grant."

"I'm serious, Dominic!" Grant hissed. "She just admitted tonight she knows every ledger in the building! She dressed up, embarrassed Moretti, and now our docks are getting hit? She’s a federal mole!"

"She is not a mole," Dominic growled, releasing him. "She saved this company three times this week alone."

"Then who leaked the files?!" Grant demanded.

Dominic stared down the long marble corridor, his mind racing through the financial anomalies Evelyn had mentioned over the past few days.

"Someone who wanted to make Evelyn look guilty," Dominic realized slowly. "Someone who was skimming fuel money at Pier 42."

Julian Moretti.

Dominic turned back to the library door, but when he opened it, the room was empty. The window facing the side alley was slightly open, the cold rain blowing inside.

Evelyn was gone.
