Chapter 3 - The Price of Silence

By midnight, the gala had transitioned into private lounge meetings.
Dominic pulled Evelyn away from a group of impressed construction executives into a quiet, mahogany-paneled library near the back of Aster House.
He shut the double doors, locking them with a click.
Evelyn turned around, her emerald gown catching the dim lamplight. "Did I overstep during dinner, Mr. Vale?"
Dominic walked toward her, taking slow, deliberate steps until he stood inches away from her. The distance between them was thick with tension.
"Who are you, Evelyn?" Dominic asked, his voice low and intense.
"I'm your secretary," she said simple. "Thirty years old. Punctual. Practical."
"Don't play with me," Dominic rasped, reaching out. His fingers gently touched the exposed skin of her shoulder, feeling her shiver slightly at his touch. "No ordinary secretary knows the covert fuel ledgers of the Moretti family. No ordinary secretary dresses like a queen and dismantles mob bosses over salad."
Evelyn looked up into his dark eyes, her composure cracking just a fraction.
"I needed the money, Dominic," she whispered softly, using his first name for the first time in four years.
"For what?"
"My mother," Evelyn confessed, her voice tight with suppressed emotion. "She has early-onset dementia. She lives in a private care facility in Albany that costs seven thousand dollars a month. Four years ago, I was an auditor for the IRS. I found out your company was hiding three million in offshore accounts."
Dominic’s eyes widened slightly.
"Instead of reporting you," Evelyn continued, stepping closer to him, "I resigned. I applied for the secretary job at Vale Strategic Holdings. I realized I could make more money keeping your books clean from the inside than I ever could put you in prison."
Dominic stared at her, stunned. "You've been protecting me?"
"I was protecting my mother's medical bills," Evelyn corrected defensively, though her breath hitched as Dominic’s hand slid up to cradle the nape of her neck.
"You hid behind gray cardigans and thick glasses so no one would see how brilliant you are," Dominic murmured, his thumb brushing over her cheekbone. "So no one would see how dangerous you are."
"I hid because I knew if Grant or Moretti saw me as a threat, they would kill me," Evelyn said quietly. "And because I wanted you to think I was harmless."
May you like
"I never thought you were harmless, Evelyn," Dominic whispered, his face dipping closer to hers. "I thought you were the only sane thing in my life."
Before she could reply, his lips met hers in a fierce, breathless kiss.
