Chapter 4 - The Unholy Alliance

Within forty-eight hours, the war escalated.

I moved out of my Denver apartment under the protection of Victoria Vance’s security team and into Grandma’s gated estate in the foothills. The property was quiet, surrounded by pine trees and stone walls, but outside the gates, reporters and process servers were already gathering.

My father had made good on his threat. Backed by a high-powered corporate law firm, he filed an emergency injunction to freeze my bank accounts, claiming I had exercised undue influence over a vulnerable elderly woman.

When Victoria brought me the legal documents, one detail caught my eye immediately: the law firm representing my father was Vance Corporate Litigation.

“Victor Vance is funding your father's lawsuit,” Victoria explained as we sat in Grandma's study. “Victor promised Richard that if he successfully annuls the trust, Victor will bail out Richard’s failing company and give Marcus a position on his board.”

“Dad sold me out to Grandma’s worst enemy just to cover his own debts,” I said, feeling a cold numbness settle in my chest.

“He sold out the whole family,” Victoria corrected. “Victor doesn't care about Richard or Marcus. He wants access to the Whitaker Energy Patents—the core asset inside the trust. If Victor gets those patents, he monopolizes clean energy tech across three continents.”

Suddenly, the front gate intercom buzzed. Security footage on the monitor showed a slick Mercedes sedan parked outside. A man in his early sixties with silver hair and a tailored coat stepped out, alongside my father and Marcus.

It was Victor Vance himself.

Victoria pressed the intercom button. “State your business, Victor.”

“Tell my daughter to step aside,” Victor’s smooth voice filtered through the speaker. “And tell Claire Whitaker that her little fairy tale is over. We have a signed affidavit from her family declaring her mentally unstable and incapable of managing estate funds. Open the gates, or we serve the warrant with the sheriff.”
