Two years after the text, I stood in my office, looking at the city skyline. Jensen Strategic Consulting had just signed a major contract with a national firm.
My phone buzzed. It was an email from a state prison. It was from Ethan.
Clara, I know you won't care, but I'm sorry. I had no idea who you were. I lost everything, and I deserve it. I just wanted you to know that I know.
I read the email, my expression neutral. I didn't feel angry. I didn't feel sorry. I felt nothing at all. He wasn't the man I had married, and he certainly wasn't the man I had feared. He was just a small, broken person who had finally realized the truth.
