Chapter 3 - The Silence of the Prey

For the next three weeks, the silence from Naomi's side was absolute. To the outside world, she had vanished. She spent her days in Ruth's peaceful suburban home, learning how to be a mother without the suffocating presence of Diane Hayes monitoring her every movement. She watched Leo smile for the first time, a pure, unblemished moment of joy that wasn't interrupted by a demand to iron Trevor’s shirts or catalog the estate's silver collections.

Meanwhile, across town in Scottsdale, the Hayes family was already moving forward with their narrative.

Through Ruth’s network of old society contacts, news began to filter back to the safe house. Trevor had been spotted at the exclusive Silverleaf Country Club, openly accompanied by Chloe Vance, a twenty-four-year-old interior designer whom Diane had conveniently hired to "redecorate" the estate's west wing during Naomi's third trimester.

"They're telling everyone you suffered a postpartum nervous breakdown," Ruth reported one evening, setting down a plate of fresh pasta. "Diane has been telling the charity board members that you abandoned the child and fled the state, forcing Trevor to assume full emergency custody options—though they haven't actually tried to locate Leo yet."

Naomi took a calm sip of water. "They don't want the baby, Ruth. They want the image of the baby. Trevor needs an heir for the legacy, but he wants Chloe to provide the pristine, society-approved version. He thinks I’ll break and trade full custody for a small monthly alimony check."

The next morning, the trap was officially set. A private process server knocked on Ruth’s door, delivering a thick white envelope addressed to Naomi Fletcher.

It was Trevor’s formal divorce petition.

Naomi opened the documents on the dining table, her eyes skipping past the standard legal jargon directly to the attached Sworn Financial Affidavit. She scanned the numbers line by line. Trevor had listed his total monthly income as twelve thousand dollars, claiming his position at Hayes Enterprises was a modest, salaried managerial role. He listed his personal bank accounts as totaling less than eighty-five thousand dollars, and claimed the Scottsdale estate belonged entirely to a family trust that he had no legal access to.

Most insultingly, he requested sole physical custody of Leo, citing Naomi's "unstable emotional state and lack of financial means to provide a stable home environment," while offering her supervised visitation twice a month.

Naomi picked up her phone, dialing Arthur Vance’s direct line. "Arthur. It’s Naomi. He just served me."

"Did he sign the financial disclosure?" Arthur asked instantly.

"Yes. Notarized and stamped by his corporate legal team yesterday afternoon."

"Beautiful," Arthur’s voice boomed with satisfaction. "I’ll see you at the courthouse tomorrow morning, Naomi. The Hayes family thinks they are attending a routine temporary orders hearing to set child support. They have no idea they are walking into an execution."
