Chapter 4 - The Courtroom Trap

The Maricopa County Superior Court was bustling with morning traffic, but the atmosphere inside Courtroom 402 was deathly quiet. Trevor Hayes sat at the petitioner’s table, looking every bit the golden boy of the Phoenix business elite. His charcoal gray suit was immaculate, his hair perfectly coiffed, and his corporate attorney, an expensive, slick litigator named Richard Sterling, was whispering confidently in his ear.

Diane Hayes sat in the front row of the gallery, her designer sunglasses perched atop her head, her expression one of utter boredom, as if she were waiting for an untidy chore to be completed.

When Naomi walked through the double doors, a visible ripple of shock passed through the Hayes camp.

She wasn't wearing the faded sweatpants or the tired, defeated expression they had expected. Naomi wore a sharp, tailored navy blue pencil dress, her hair pinned up in a commanding, professional chignon. She carried herself with the calm, unshakeable poise of a senior corporate auditor. Beside her walked Arthur Vance, his heavy leather briefcase looking like a weapon.

Trevor smirked as Naomi took her seat at the respondent’s table, leaning over to his lawyer. "This will take ten minutes," he muttered loud enough for the microphone to catch. "She doesn't even have enough money to pay Vance’s retainer for the month."

Judge Evelyn Monroe, a no-nonsense jurist with a reputation for absolute fairness, took the bench and banged her gavel. "Case number FC-2026-0894, Hayes versus Hayes. This is a temporary orders hearing regarding child custody, support, and asset preservation. Mr. Sterling, you may address the court regarding your client's petition."

Sterling stood up, smoothing his tie. "Your Honor, my client, Trevor Hayes, is simply seeking to protect his two-month-old son. As outlined in our petition, the respondent, Naomi Fletcher, abandoned the marital residence in the middle of the night, taking the infant without warning. Given her complete lack of income, employment, or stable housing, we ask for immediate temporary physical custody to remain with the father at the Hayes estate, where a full staff and nursery are prepared."

Judge Monroe turned her sharp gaze toward Arthur Vance. "Mr. Vance, your response?"

Arthur stood up slowly, not even glancing at his notes. "Your Honor, my client did not abandon her home. She fled a toxic environment minutes after her husband verbally demanded a divorce at 4:30 in the morning while she was holding their newborn child. But more importantly, Your Honor, we are here today to contest the absolute validity of the petitioner’s sworn financial disclosure."

Trevor rolled his eyes, leaning back in his chair.

"Mr. Hayes has submitted a sworn statement to this court claiming a monthly income of twelve thousand dollars and personal assets under a hundred thousand dollars," Arthur continued, his voice rising, filling the courtroom. "I would like to present Respondent's Exhibit A—a verified forensic audit of Apex Meridian LLC, Apex Cayman Holdings, and the Hayes Charitable Foundation."

Richard Sterling stood up instantly. "Objection, Your Honor! These entities are entirely separate from the marital estate and belong to third-party family trusts!"

"The objection is overruled," Judge Monroe said, her eyes fixed on the massive binder Arthur was delivering to the bailiff. "I will review the exhibit."

As the judge turned the first page, the smirk completely vanished from Trevor’s face. He looked at Naomi, but she didn't look back. She was staring straight ahead, her face an unreadable mask of absolute, calculated victory.
